I often speak of the importance of transparency in any contact with an extraterrestrial civilization. That concept of transparency refers to how human institutions should share all possible information about extraterrestrials with the public. I'm not speaking of any current situation. I don't believe humans have had contact with extraterrestrials, yet. But there is a flipside to this argument: what expectations do we have for extraterrestrials in regard to transparency? The simple answer is- high expectations.
Transparency is just the latest buzz word for an integral part of human life. Most elements of human society consider honesty and openness to be important and admirable behaviors. They are also behaviors that we often fail to live up to. That's quite the dichotomy and one that visiting aliens might have trouble understanding. Honesty and openness are behaviors that we strive for and yet the gray areas are much more common. It would be tough to explain to extraterrestrials the concept of the white lie. Complete honesty and openness could cause chaos in our daily lives, and yet we hold such behavior in high esteem.
So, if the concept of transparency, tied to the human behaviors of honesty and openness, is so complicated for humans, what hope do we have of communicating this concept to aliens? It's an important consideration. Any direct extraterrestrial contact will likely have an element of fear for humans. The only way to quell that fear is through communication. Extraterrestrials would need to let us know their motives for making contact and make clear their goals for having a relationship with the human race. Honesty is a pretty big part of that communication. How do we trust aliens we know nothing about? One would imagine that their concept of honesty and openness could be quite different from ours- especially when you consider how complicated it is here on Earth.
The situation has been made worse by our colorful imaginations. Books and movies have portrayed so many fearful and disturbing images of alien contact that it would be tough for visiting extraterrestrials to overcome the weight of popular culture. The claims of those humans reporting alien abductions would suddenly need to be reevaluated. Skepticism and caution on our part would require us to take the fears and concerns seriously. We would need honest and upfront communication from aliens. Have they been here before? What previous contact have they had with humans, if any?
Direct First Contact makes one thing easier. If it occurs in the human realm, which I would define as our solar system, it becomes our playing field. Visiting extraterrestrials would need to operate on our terms and work to make us comfortable. If aliens are able to visit our solar system they would be far more technologically advanced. That would put humans and extraterrestrials on unequal footing. The only way to even out the equation is to play by our rules. Our house, our rules.
One would expect visiting extraterrestrials to consider human public relations issues in order to put the best foot forward. Whether or not we believe them is another matter entirely. I suppose that would depend on the quality of their PR plan and the circumstances behind First Contact. A poorly executed First Contact plan could lead to immediate distrust and fear. That wouldn't help anyone.
The next question is whether we humans would be able to uphold honesty and openness in First Contact? If governments, and other institutions, attempt to keep First Contact under wraps, it will send a message to extraterrestrials: we don't really value honesty and openness. We just like to talk about it. Provide us lip service and that will be fine.
Lip service- from aliens or from our government could prove to be disastrous. First Contact would create a huge upheaval in human perspective and have a ripple effect throughout human society. Fear and distrust in humans could hurt the relationship with extraterrestrials and, in turn, hurt human civilization. If we are to truly benefit from extraterrestrial contact, human perceptions of honesty and openness will have to be the goal of humans and aliens alike. Extraterrestrials may not fully understand it and humans may have trouble living up to it, but in the end transparency will be the most important part of the new relationship.

Still, the incident serves as an illustration of what could happen when the first life beyond Earth is discovered. While scientists might be excited by the prospect, introducing the public, politicians and interest groups to the idea could take some time.
How extraterrestrial life would change our world view is a research interest of Steven Dick, who just completed a term as the Baruch S. Blumberg NASA/Library of Congress Chair of Astrobiology. The chair is jointly sponsored by the NASA Astrobiology Program and the John W. Kluge Center, at the Library of Congress.
Dick is a former astronomer and historian at the United States Naval Observatory, a past chief historian for NASA, and has published several books concerning the discovery of life beyond Earth. To Dick, even the discovery of microbes would be a profound shift for science.
"If we found microbes, it would have an effect on science, especially biology, by universalizing biology," he said. "We only have one case of biology on Earth. It's all related. It's all DNA-based. If we found an independent example on Mars or Europa, we have a chance of forming a universal biology."

Dick points out that even the possibilities of extraterrestrial fossils could change our viewpoints, such as the ongoing discussion of ALH84001, a Martian meteorite found in Antarctica that erupted into public consciousness in 1996 after a "Science" article said structures inside of it could be linked to biological activity. The conclusion, which is still debated today, led to congressional hearings.
"I've done a book about discovery in astronomy, and it's an extended process," Dick pointed out. "It's not like you point your telescope and say, 'Oh, I made a discovery.' It's always an extended process: You have to detect something, you have to interpret it, and it takes a long time to understand it. As for extraterrestrial life, the Mars rock showed it could take an extended period of years to understand it."

In his year at the Library of Congress, Dick spent time searching for historical examples (as well as historical analogies) of how humanity might deal with first contact with an extraterrestrial civilization. History shows that contact with new cultures can go in vastly different directions.
Hernan Cortes' treatment of the Aztecs is often cited as an example of how wrong first contact can go. But there were other efforts that were a little more mutually beneficial, although the outcomes were never perfect. Even when both sides were trying hard to make communication work, there were barriers, noted Dick.
"The Jesuits had contact with Native Americans," he pointed out. "Certain concepts were difficult, like when they tried to get across the ideas of the soul and immortality."
Indirect contact by way of radio communications through the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), also illustrates the challenges of transmitting information across cultures. There is historical precedence for this, such as when Greek knowledge passed west through Arab in the 12th Century. This shows that it is possible for ideas to be revived, even from dead cultures, he said.
It's also quite possible that the language we receive across these indirect communications would be foreign to us. Even though mathematics is often cited as a universal language, Dick said there are actually two schools of thought. One theory is that there is, indeed, one kind of mathematics that is based on a Platonic idea, and the other theory is that mathematics is a construction of the culture that you are in.
"There will be a decipherment process. It might be more like the Mayan decipherments," Dick said.
THE ETHICS OF CONTACT
As Dick came to a greater understanding about the potential cultural impact of extraterrestrial intelligence, he invited other scholars to present their findings along with him. Dick chaired a two-day NASA/Library of Congress Astrobiology Symposium called "Preparing for Discovery," which was intended to address the impact of finding any kind of life beyond Earth, whether microbial or some kind of intelligent, multicellular life form.

The symposium participants discussed how to move beyond human-centered views of defining life, how to understand the philosophical and theological problems a discovery would bring, and how to help the public understand the implications of a discovery.
"There is also the question of what I call astro-ethics," Dick said. "How do you treat alien life? How do you treat it differently, ranging from microbes to intelligence? So we had a philosopher at our symposium talking about the moral status of non-human organisms, talking in relation to animals on Earth and what their status is in relation to us."
Dick plans to collect the lectures in a book for publication next year, but he also spent his time at the library gathering materials for a second book about how discovering life beyond Earth will revolutionize our thinking.
"It's very farsighted for NASA to fund a position like this," Dick added. "They have all their programs in astrobiology, they fund the scientists, but here they fund somebody to think about what the implications might be. It's a good idea to do this, to foresee what might happen before it occurs."

A massive cloaked disk shaped UFO was photographed and seen by many eyewitnesses in the Malaysian Beach Resort of Tuaran. The blue white object seemed to be immersed within the clouds above. Obviously the ship was cloaked and the white was clouds passing around it. Was the Cloaked Alien ship over Malaysia sending and receiving twitter messages? This UFO was witnessed by employees and guests alike. No Alien video available yet though.
According to researchers, the searches for extraterrestrial life are in the wrong direction: you have to look to social networks.
The signals that would be sent to media alien intelligence should be similar to reports in the social network "Twitter". This is the conclusion astrophysicist Gregory Benford and his twin brother, James Benford, a physicist and president of Microwave Sciences, according to Daily Mail.
According to them, alien civilizations are more likely to send short directed signals in the range of one to ten gigahertz, but not the volume of the messages transmitted in all directions.

There is a basic difference between this blog and much of what you will find regarding this subject on the Internet. I do not believe that extraterrestrials have been in contact with anyone on Earth thus far. I do not believe stories of Alien abduction. Regarding UFOs, there is always a chance that some extraterrestrial craft may have been spotted in the Earth atmosphere, but I think for the most part UFOs are a natural or manmade phenomenon.
There is no evidence that there is any extraterrestrial civilization in the universe. We could be quite alone. Science and logic tells us that even if there are other sentient beings in the universe, the chances of them being able to travel here to say hello are rather minute.
So why do I even bother writing all of this?
Well, first of all it's fun. I love "what ifs" and this is one of the biggest "what ifs" of all. I take one simple premise and try to figure out what might happen. The premise is that extraterrestrials, who have never contacted anyone on Earth previously, decide that now is the time for Direct First Contact. How would they realistically do it? How would we react? What are the dangers? What would the future hold for us as a civilization?
Direct First Contact of this type is not a question of science. It is a question of communication. I have no scientific expertise. I am trained as a communicator. What you read in this blog comes from a communications perspective. I grew up in a scientific household. I understand how much scientists resent wild speculation with no basis in fact, and no respect for the scientific process. I also know that scientists often enjoy science fiction, they love the "what ifs". This blog is basically science fiction, just without the drama and characters.
I must correct myself here. When I say that First Contact is not a question of science, I mean the action is not a question of the physical sciences. First Contact does have everything to do with the social sciences. Communication theory, politics, history and sociology all play a part. Psychology is another scientific field that has close correlation to First Contact. The physical sciences will be hugely changed by First Contact, but it is the social sciences that will come into play first. First Contact is simply a study of how the introduction between extraterrestrials and humans might occur and the profound reactions it would cause in human civilization.
I believe that First Contact should not occur between extraterrestrials and any national government on Earth. First Contact needs to be the start of a conversation between extraterrestrial beings and all humans. It needs to be a hello for the entire world. Ultimately some group will need to coordinate the continuing conversation and that needs to be the United Nations. It is a weak body that needs much improvement, but it is the only group that comes close to representing the entire planet.
Modern systems of communication can be leveraged to achieve First Contact. We have the technology and information networks in place currently. The proposal I make regarding First Contact utilizes the actions and reactions that automatically occur each and every day in the communications systems on this planet. The interconnected media is a powerful tool. If used correctly it can provide a quick and effective means of First Contact. You'll find a link to the entire proposal on the right hand side of the screen.
I could be very wrong. Perhaps there is some vast Alien conspiracy involving secret government contact that has been hidden from us for many years. However the realities of human interaction cause me to very much doubt that such conspiracies could be maintained for a week, or a month, let alone years.
First Contact would not be easy. It must be done quickly, effectively and lead us down a positive path of new understanding. Every relationship starts with an introduction. This blog is about that big hello.

For decades, researchers involved in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) have scanned the skies for evidence that aliens are trying to contact us. But so far, except for the so-called "Wow signal," a tantalizingly brief, thus far unexplained narrowband radio burst picked up by an Ohio State University radio telescope in 1977, they've yet to find any evidence of a message sent by a faraway civilization.But imagine that tomorrow, researchers' wildest dreams are realized, and they pick up a clear, unmistakable communication from deep space. That raises another intriguing dilemma. How would we respond to an alien species in a manner that they would understand? And what should we say to them? After all, it's a bit much to expect that extraterrestrials-assuming that they possess sensory organs and brains reasonably compatible with ours-would comprehend English or another human language."The problem invites us to think about language, communication and intelligence at the deepest levels," researchers Guillermo A. Lemarchand and Jon Lomberg write in an essay in the 2011 anthology, "Communication with Extraterrestrial Intelligence."For centuries, those who've speculated about the possibility of extraterrestrial civilizations have been trying to come up with a suitable method for get in touch with them. Back in the early 19th century, the German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss proposed mowing giant triangles or ellipses into the Siberian grasslands, in hopes that alien astronomers would spot them and realize that humans were intelligent enough to grasp the basics of geometry. In 1937, the visionary inventor Nikola Tesla claimed that he had developed an electrical apparatus capable of communicating with other worlds, though he never revealed exactly how it worked.And some have actually tried already. That points to another problem with attempting to communicate with distant civilizations via radio: by the time they get a message hundreds or thousands of years from now and send a reply, the humans who initiated the contact are likely to be long forgotten, and in a worst-case scenario, our species might be extinct.Presuming that we someday were able to transcend that problem by developing some sort of faster-than-light mode of communication-or that the aliens came to us, as the fictional extraterrestrials did in the 1977 film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"-we'd still have to figure out how to make ourselves understood. In lieu of spoken or written language, some have suggested using mathematics or illustrations of scientific principles to communicate. That strategy, Lemarchand and Lomberg note, assumes that the alien mind organizes ideas and perceptions in a fashion similar to ours, which may or may not be the case. Another idea would be to use a montage of sounds of phenomena associated with life on Earth-from the sound of rainfall and animal noises to the sounds made by babies-as a sort of aural "cognitive map" that would explain the nature of our species to aliens.But there also are those who argue that we shouldn't try to communicate with aliens at all. In a 2010 documentary, physicist Stephen Hawking warns that if extraterrestrials with more advanced technology than ours visited Earth, they could exploit or exterminate us, in the fashion that Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World turned into a disaster for native peoples. Let's say that an extraterrestrial civilization was watching and studying humans as we scurry around on planet Earth (and I'm not saying they are). What might cause them to reconsider a hands-off policy and decide that intervention, through Direct First Contact, was necessary?
This, of course, depends on their reason for studying us in the first place. Are they just scientific minded (in an alien sort of way)? Or perhaps they want to help us along and have good intentions for human civilization? They could also have ill will towards us of some sort? The motivation for First Contact is essential in any scenario. It ultimately would direct how they might respond.
So perhaps they do have our best interests at heart. What might cause them to step out of the wings and say hello? If they really do care what happens to us, then perhaps it would come down to what they think might happen to human civilization in event of First Contact. From our extremely limited perspective it could certainly appear that western civilization is on the ropes and democracy is facing a huge challenge. Will our economic woes lead to the failure of the American dream? Do the aliens even give two damns about the American dream? Who's to say the Chinese model doesn't make more sense to them? But let's say they do care about democracy and the freedom of the individual being. What would provoke them to say hello?
I can think of a number of reasons they may want to do contact us. The first would be to shock our economic system back to life. If the U.S. economy goes flatline, the mere appearance of extraterrestrials could jump start the global economy. Suddenly, there would be all sorts of economic opportunities. Investors might see a reason to re-enter the market to try and capitalize on what could be the next big things: space development and cutting edge technologies. Banks could be more likely to loan money as new ideas enter our system. A little alien information could be a big boost to the faltering world economy. The next reason could be that extraterrestrials do give a damn about individual liberty and freedom of information. As many problems as we have in the United States, we have about the best system on the planet for continuing these human freedoms. Extraterrestrials may not be American supporters per se, but they could support the ideals we stand for, no matter how much we might trample them ourselves. The third reason could be to interject themselves into a larger philosophical war, one that we can't fully see, due to our limited perspective. The rise of religious fundamentalism is a global phenomenon. It's happening all over the world, including in Muslim, Jewish and Christian sects. Perhaps there is a larger battle occurring between secular-scientific thought and regressive religious thought, and perhaps they are worried about how it might turn out for us?
Much of this line of thought is wishful thinking on our part. It would be swell to have extraterrestrials come and help us solve our problems. There have certainly been points in human history where civilization was much more endangered. World War Two and the Cuban Missile Crisis are two examples. Aliens didn't show up then, so why should they now?
It could be that from the alien perspective it's not so much a case of humanity on the ropes and needing help, as it is humanity in an important phase of development. Despite world economic woes our technology has drawn us together, the threat of all-out nuclear war has lessened considerably in recent years and we are showing signs of greater global cooperation. Maybe we're ready and that is their only consideration? They may have just been waiting for us to grow up.
