Westrum says when an event is widely experienced but seldom reported, we can refer to it as a "hidden event." Many anomalous events, including UFOs, by appearing to violate common sense or scientific paradigms, fall into this category. We talk to Ron about hidden events and how the public had reacted to them historically and how that relates to UFOs. We also talk to him about his lifelong interest in the UFO phenomena, and his work as a consultant for the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON).
Ron Westrum is emeritus professor of Sociology at Eastern Michigan University, holding an honors B.A. from Harvard in Social Relations and a Ph.D from the University of Chicago in Sociology. Dr. Westrum is a specialist on the sociology of science and technology, and has written books such as "Technologies and Society: The Shaping of People and Things" (1991), as well as "Sidewinder: Creative Missile Design at China Lake" (1999). He has been a consultant for NASA, for the National Research Council, and also for the Mutual UFO Network.
He will be speaking at the MUFON Symposium in July, 2013, and the 2013 Symposium on Official and Scientific Investigations of UFOs in June, 2013.

I spoke at length with a Skaneateles, NY woman who awoke around 3:00 a.m. on October 12 and observed a "fiery Chinese dragon" shaped object in the sky that transformed into "a long whip shape" as it proceeded west. Then, on October 15, a Camillus, NY teenager and at least nine other witnesses watched two large, very bright lights appearing to be part of the same flashing object. At some point, a "ball" that blinked red, green and orange, with a circle of lights surrounding it, approached the first object. This second object stopped and hovered above the witnesses, and shortly the initial UFO flew directly above the second "as if they had merged" and both disappeared in different directions. On October 19 a witness in Constantia, NY viewed an object with green and red lights close to the waters of Oneida Lake. As he continued his observation, he saw it "skirt across" the water and it disappeared behind some trees. The UFO came to his attention initially because its brilliant lights reflected through his window.Not even the Central NY winter could deter the steady flow of UFO reports. On December 7 I spoke with a Syracuse University law student who, with his girlfriend, a TV-radio major at S.U., experienced a bizarre object two nights previously. Observing from inside a dormitory, they watched as a diamond-shaped object, flat on the side, appeared over the campus. "Glowing lines" shooting from the thing helped define its shape. The witness further clarified that the object's color resembled that of a star, but sparks of red, yellow and green also exuded from it After watching the thing for 40-45 seconds, the witnesses watched it fly straight up in the sky and it disappeared quickly.The national media's frenzy to report anything about UFOs encounters, true or not, resulted in considerable confusion at times. Following the Pascagoula fishermen abduction, James Lorenzen of the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization offered a statement to the effect that people were seeing UFOs despite national attention on the Watergate scandal and Middle East tensions -- but some in the press misinterpreted his words to imply that he was actually saying people were observing UFOs merely as a distraction from these national concerns.

Myself and an employee were leaving my business in Hunters Point, located in San Francisco, California. As we were about to get into my truck we both noticed at the same time a bright silver orb that seemed to have a distorted field all around it hovering over San Francisco Bay. During our observation ( approx 40 min.)we both seemed to be locked in focus. The object was spinning fast, directly next to Hunters Point Power Station. It seemed that the object was taking power from the Power Plant. The distortion and the inability to remember I had a new top end camera around my head and was unable to use it. Somehow the sphere took hold of our will. The next thing I remembered was that we had left the city and were in Santa Clara when we pulled over and said at the same time " did you see what I saw". I can't reason why I couldn't take one picture? Has anyone out there seen something like this? Morfeuz60...

Driving to work last night 12/13/11 I saw these balls of what looked like fire in the sky. It was rainy and nasty out and I pulled over and caut them with my phone.
Not very good quality I know but the best I could describe it I would say they looked like weather balloons with fire burning inside them. Too small to be hot air balloons, and too big to be normal balloons not to mention, wouldnt fire melt them? The one think I am sure about was they had fire in them. I saw only 2 at first but then they just kept coming from over the horizon. Other cars were pulled over just as mystified as myself. My son and I were driving to our cabin when I noticed an object only a few hundred feet in the air, it was moving slowly with several lights, almost resembling a combine in the air. It had one pulsating orange ish light and several small white lights around the border that easily resemble stars however it defiantly formed the outline of the object.
The first time we saw it for only thirty seconds before all of a sudden it was gone.
The second time was a few miles further down the road when my son noticed it again. This time we watched it slowly move Northeast, we were driving 70mph and it was pulling away from us. At first I thought it could be a large aircraft like a B-2 bomber however Ive never seen a plane that could move that slow.
It definitely blended into the sky well but the lights easily made it stand out in the dark sky. Im still very unsure what it is we saw but know for a fact its nothing like anything Ive seen before....
