DAVID CLARKE. THE UFO FILES: THE INSIDE STORY OF REAL-LIFE SIGHTINGS. THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES, 2009.
If someone had said say 20 years ago, that a UK 'government agency' would publish a book on UFOs, or at least one that did not dismiss the subject with a laugh and a sneer, they would have been thought crazy. Well times change. However this change of policy has less to do with some sort of "educational policy" than the realisation that UFOs look a likely mulch cow for the cash strapped National Archives, which appears not to be making as much money out of the family historians as they thought they were going to. The release of so many documents to them under the Freedom of Information Act looks like a boon.
That being said, this is a sensible and sober approach to the subject by one of the very few people who investigates the subject without pursuing some kind of agenda. He traces official involvement with strange objects and lights in the sky going back to the time of the 1909 and 1913 airships, including little known studies during the First World War. A couple of these WWI accounts look really puzzling; one may perhaps be the first 'electromagnetic' case reported. It concerns a fighter pilot sent up to intercept a suspected Zeppelin, who finds his plane misfiring, then sees above him and to the right "row of lighted windows which looked something like a railway carriage with the blinds drawn". The pilot draws out his pistol (yes, pistol, this is the First World War) at which the lights rise into the darkness and breakneck speed.
Of particular interest is a previously untapped source: a 1921 survey of ball lighting reports. Clarke estimates that only 65 out of 115 letters and questionnaires returned related to things which might reasonably be classed as ball lightening, the rest consists of a miscellaneous collection of peculiar lights in the sky of various kinds, some of which rather resemble modern UFO reports.
There are a couple of equally interesting reports from the Second World War, in which something other than the fuzzy foo fighters were seen, though it is perhaps significant that the actual report of an object most closely resembling a modern UFO was not made contemporaneously, but decades later, well into the age of the flying saucer.
As we get into the post 1947 era of the flying saucer, we can trace all the various highways and byways of official investigations, virtually all predicated on the view that if what was seen wasn't Russian it was of no little or no defence significance or interest. Veteran ufologists who read this book in hopes of 'smoking guns' and 'amazing revelations' will be rather disappointed, for it is clear that reports investigated officially were the same sort of report, and in many cases exactly the same reports that were investigated by various ufologists, and appeared in the pages of Flying Saucer Review. So for us old-timers this is more of a nostalgia fest than a revelation. Of course, veteran ufologists are not the main intended audience.
In many ways this book demonstrates that the official investigations showed what was already known by the saner ufologists: that the vast majority of UFO reports are generated by a vast variety of normal stimuli, which witnesses misidentify, misperceive or mis-remember, but that there is a small group which if accurately reported are very puzzling indeed. Whether they would remain so if subjected a really thorough scientific investigation is a moot point, and of course unidentified and puzzling are not the same thing as extraterrestrial. Indeed the puzzling reports are probably just as heterogeneous as the rest.
What is clear is that there is no secret information, no smoking gun, no inside knowledge. In fact Clarke confirms what we might suspect, that the views held by the various officials involved mirrored those of the general public, and were based on the same popular books. This seems to be still the case. For example, it seems pretty obvious that the background knowledge on UFOs of the anonymous author of the Condign Report was largely based on the writings of Jenny Randles.
Sometimes there were cock-ups of the silliest kinds, like the exasperated warnings to pilots not to amuse themselves on training flights by looking for crop circles, as this was giving rise to rumours of "an official investigation".
So all in all an excellent introduction for the newcomer and a welcome walk down memory lane for the veteran ufologist, and a reminder to us all that things in the this field are likely to be a good deal more complicated than the simple world views of the more naive 'believers' and 'skeptics' alike. OCEAN SHORES, Wash. (AP) - William Puckett's work has him going more than he ever did when he was a full-time employee. It helps him put the pieces of the puzzle together.
As a UFO investigator, Puckett acknowledges or debunks stories of unidentified flying objects in the sky, landing on the ground and hovering over homes through his Web site www.ufosnw.com.
Along the way, the former National Weather Service and Enviromental Protection Agency meteorologist believes he and others are closer to proving that we aren't the only ones living in this universe.
"My intent behind this - why I do this - is for my own scientific curiosity," said the Ocean Shores resident. "I want to stimulate the awareness of this phenomena to the public. It isn't all crackpots and nutcases, although some of them are. I believe that we are not alone."
Puckett's work as a UFO investigator expanded in 2004 when he began his site - UFOs Northwest - during his final years as an EPA weather forecaster in Bellevue. However, his interest in the subject began in the early days of UFO sightings and hysteria.
"I grew up in the 1950s and UFOs were on the national news," said the Peerless, Mont., native, who moved to Ocean Shores last summer. "In those days, everyone believed they were Russian. Later, we learned that they had UFO cases and the objects weren't their's either. If they weren't from the U.S. or from Russia or from escaped Nazi scientists, what were they?"
Movies such as "The Day The Earth Stood Still" and other early science fiction stories further fueled his imagination. His interest intensified in the 1970s when the U.S. government released the declassified Air Force Project Blue Book. In it, the Air Force studied UFO cases between 1947-69 and had more than 800 unidentified cases.
"That was good, because you only need one," added Puckett. "I realized that I'm a scientist and I can study this, too. That was the beginning."
On the site, people from around the country send Puckett their sightings, which he breaks down to either prove that it is "unexplained or unknown" or a hoax. It is an extensive site filled with sightings, audio and video clips, news articles on sightings, abduction and close encounter cases and historical pieces.
"It takes a lot of work; I don't charge anyone for their cases and the only money I get from it is from ads that help pay for the site," Puckett said.

Baldin states that most governments around the world know about Aliens coming to this planet and have dealings with such beings but keep a tight lid on those activities and dogmatically dismiss and ridicule the whole UFO phenomena and people who dare speak of it. In the series of books that the author has written he gives insight to the Alien beings and shares some of the information he received during his contacts with extraterrestrial, and some of the bizarre things he saw and experienced inside the Alien ships during and after his military career. Inside the Alien ship, the author experienced sensations far different and more intense than the normal five senses and was able to recall memories quickly and accurately; a sensation that took getting used to. There were other people inside the ship but most did not appear to be conscious of where they were; they didn't talk and waited outside of a room for their turn to enter, as if at a doctor's office, said the author. The ship didn't have seating and some rooms didn't have doors; one room had a table with a man lying on it with no clothes on and bizarre objects flew around him while two Aliens stood by watching the presumably medical procedure being done on the man, said the author. UFO SIGHTING IN WALTERS, OKLAHOMA ON MAY 3RD 2013 - 2 GLOWING FIREBALLS IN THE NORTHERN SKYI went out on the deck late at night to smoke and saw a fireball in the sky to the north. It wasn't moving just appeared to hover in the sky. I watched it wondering what it could be. It was there a couple of minutes then just disappeared. I went inside where my granddaughter was watching tv and told her i had just seen something odd. My first ufo. I was curious and went back out and sure enough it appeared again in the same place but now there were two of them. I told my granddaughter to come and look. Reluctantly she did and was amazed at what we were looking at. I told her to go get her Dad. Both of the fireballs disappeared again but reappeared after a bit. My son saw them as they were reappearing. One of them at one point descended slowly downward and then disappeared behind the tree line. It was visible behind the trees until it went out again. We got the binoculars out but it didn't really help. We watched them come and go four or five times for about an hour. We finally decided they weren't going to do anything except hover and disappear so we went inside. BLACK TRIANGLE SIGHTING IN MONTOUR FALLS, NEW YORK ON FEBRUARY 5TH 2015 - I HAVE BEEN SEEING TRINGLE SHAPED OBJECTS IM THE SKY FOR ALMOST A MONTH STRAIRT EVERY NIGHT IT IS ONGOING
About a month ago I noticed a odd flashing light in the sky. At the time I thought it must be a plane or radio tower light. A couple days later I saw the same lights (in a different location) that was when I noticed that there were numerous objects. Since then Ive seen then EVERY NIGHT! Id come to think that they must be natural. But tonight I saw them move for the first time. No noise just a slow steady hovering movement to the east. Also tonight was the first time one was close enough to get a good look. I have no clue whats going on. What I do know is that they are up there every night dozens of them. 1993 THE MASLIN BEACH, AUSTRALIA PHOTOS
Maslin Beach is a coastal suburb in the south of Adelaide, South Australia. The photographs are quite sensational, and there are really just two alternatives: either Eric Thomason's photographs are the most astounding so far, or it's just a simple hoax. Eric Thomason, 69, is a senior citizen living in Maslin Beach in southern Australia. Not far from his house is an old abandoned mine, Maslin Old Quarry, where he sometimes takes his dog for a walk. In March 1993, Eric decided to try to document the old mine using his son's camera, a Kodak S50 with a Fuji 100 ASA-film. Despite having never owned a camera of his own and having virtually no experiencing photographing, Eric set off in order to try to capture the beautiful colors of the open-cast mine from as many angles as possible. And, s photo contest in the magazine "Southern Times-Messenger" about the best image of a sunrise over land also helped him in his decision. He thought he would be able to capture the sunrise on film from Ochre Point, a cliff 60 meters high from where hang-gliders used to take off - but the sun was hidden behind a dense layer of clouds.
Wednesday, March 10, didn't appear to be much better. It was a cool morning, only 14 degrees Celsius, and a stubborn wind came from the west. From the top of the grassy cliff, Eric was forced to accept that there wasn't going to be a sunrise that morning either. A persistent layer of clouds blocked out the sun, and the time was 06:00 AM when Eric instead turned to face the ocean to the west.
- It was then that I saw a movement on the surface on the water, and something looking like the tower on an atomic submarine emerged, Eric tells UFO-Sweden. When the object rose from the water I was able to see how three legs were pointing out from the hull. I was also able to see how it was spinning, and how the three legs were pulled in.
Before the legs were pulled in, Eric managed to take his first photograph of the object, and he estimates the distance to the object at the time being about 400 meters. It then dawned on him how exposed his position was. Standing on top of the Ochre Point with the sun right behind him made him an easy target to spot for a possible crew.
- I had heard of people being abducted by UFOs, so I climbed down a slope nearby. From there I could see how the light-grey object came flying somewhat south of me, and came to a halt over the mine. At that very moment I spotted yet another object, north of the first one. That's when I snapped my second picture, but since the light from the sunrise was straight into my view-finder I moved a little to the left.
While taking photographs from his hideout five meters below the top of the cliff, the new object moved towards the larger one, came to a halt, and then continued upwards, into a deepening in the larger object.
In a report form to the Australian UFO-group Australian Flying Saucer Research Society, Eric estimates the size of the object to be 40 meters, and the distance (when he first saw it rise from the ocean) to be 2 kilometers. While talking to him on the phone, Eric tells me how it never got closer to him than 400 meters. When the incident was over, Eric returned home. However, despite his amazing encounter he decided to remain quiet about it, even to his wife. He first wanted to have the film developed in order to find out if there indeed were any photographs of it. But he was not in a hurry. Before he handed in the film for development he made sure to use up the entire film. And not until May, 1994, when he had watched a UFO show on TV, did he bring forward the photographs.
- At first he didn't tell me anything since I wasn't feeling well at the time, and later he believed that the photographs weren't going to show anything, Mrs. Thomason says when UFO-Sweden talks to her. But after he had had the film developed he showed them to me. I'm certain it's a spaceship. Eric is not the lying type, and I believe him.
Still, there are several details in his story that are worth pondering. Eric Thomason set his alarm clock to 05:45 in order to catch the sunrise, which took place around 06:00. During these 15 minutes, Mr. Thomason had time to get out of bed, put on several layers of warm clothing, bring his camera, fetch the dog at the back of the house, walk to Ochre Point (which according to Mrs. Thomason takes 5 minutes), climb the 60 meters tall cliff, wait for the failed sunrise, and then walk on to another site close by in order to look out over the ocean. At 06:00 sharp he took his first photograph of the object. The bright blue sky on the first photograph suggests the images were taken later in the day. In a letter, Eric describes what happened when the photographs were returned from the photo lab: "When the film had been developed I noticed yet another object on the first photograph, which I hadn't seen during the incident itself. A black dot in the distance, halfway between the object and the edge of the photograph, which might have been an airplane several kilometers away, or the smaller object on its way to intercept with the larger one."
According to Eric, the negatives were analyzed by Kodak in Adelaide, but he doesn't know anything about the results. The camera Eric used was a cheap Kodak S50, purchased in a department store for 40 USD. The S50 uses normal 35 mm film, and has never been available on the Swedish market. Its focus is set, and cannot be changed. There are, on the whole, no buttons to push except the shutter release. Cameras of this type are always set on infinitude, and have a large depth of field. And here's where an uncertainty becomes apparent. If you look at the first photograph the object, which supposedly is 400 meters away, is in focus while the horizon is fuzzy. As a matter of fact, both the object and the horizon should be in focus. That aside, the images agree with Eric's story, and during our entire conversation he answers all my questions correct, even when I try to trap him. After this article went into print in UFO-Sweden's magazine UFO-Aktuellt in 1996 several readers has pointed out that the Maslin Beach UFO does have many similarities with a part of the ventilation system built for private boats. As can be seen in the pictures below, this theory can not be ruled out. The author of this article is currently trying to find more ventilation parts that could make a better match.
This picture, taken by the author, shows a part of the ventilation system for private boats. The part is made of plastic and very light and shows many similarities to the Maslin Beach UFO but of a different brand. The ventilation part comes in several different configurations. To this date it has not been able to find a part with the exact looks of the Maslin Beach object.
