"We are just starting to put together the puzzle pieces of what's happening with these planets, and we still don't know what the final picture will be."
The very first exoplanet discovered around a sun-like star was, in fact, a hot Jupiter, called 51 Pegasi b. It was detected in 1995 by Swiss astronomers using the radial velocity technique, which measures the wobble of a star caused by the tug of a planet. Because hot Jupiters are heavy and whip around their stars quickly, they are the easiest to find using this strategy. Dozens of hot Jupiter discoveries soon followed. At first, researchers thought they might represent a more common configuration for other planetary systems in our galaxy beyond our own solar system. But new research, including that from NASA's Kepler space telescope, has shown that they are relatively rare.
In 2005, scientists were thrilled when Spitzer became the first telescope to detect light emitted by an exoplanet. Spitzer monitored the infrared light coming from a star and its planet -- a hot Jupiter -- as the planet disappeared behind the star in an event known as a secondary eclipse. Once again, this technique works best for hot Jupiters, because they are the biggest and hottest planets.
In addition to watching hot Jupiters slip behind their stars, researchers also use Spitzer to monitor the planets as they orbit all the way around a star. This allows them to create global climate maps, revealing how the planets' atmospheres vary from their hot, sun-facing sides to their cooler, night sides, due in part to fierce winds. (Hot Jupiters are frequently tidally locked, with one side always facing the star, just as our moon is locked to Earth.)
Since that first observation, Spitzer has probed the atmospheres of dozens of hot Jupiters, and some even smaller planets, uncovering clues about their composition and climate.
"When Spitzer launched in 2003, we had no idea it would prove to be a giant in the field of exoplanet science," said Michael Werner, the Spitzer project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "Now, we're moving farther into the field of comparative planetary science, where we can look at these objects as a class, and not just as individuals."
In the new study, Lewis and colleagues made the longest Spitzer observation yet of a hot Jupiter. The infrared telescope stared at the HAT-P-2 system continuously for six days, watching it cross in front of its star, slip behind, and then reappear on the other side, making a full orbit. What makes the observation even more exciting to scientists is that the planet has a comet-like eccentric orbit, carrying it as close as 2.8 million miles (4.5 million kilometers) to the star and out to as far as 9.3 million miles (15 million kilometers). For reference, Mercury is about 28.5 million miles from our sun.
"It's as if nature has given us a perfect lab experiment with this system," said Heather Knutson, a co-author of the new paper at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, Calif. "Because the planet's distance to the sun changes, we can watch how fast it takes to heat up and cool down. It's as though we're turning the heat knob up on our planet and watching what happens." Knutson led the first team to create a global "weather" map of a hot Jupiter, called HD 189733 b, in 2007.
The new HAT-P-2b study is also one of the first to use multiple wavelengths of infrared light, instead of just one, while watching a full orbit of a hot Jupiter. This enables the scientists to peer down into different layers of the planet.
The results reveal that HAT-P-2b takes about a day to heat up as it approaches the hottest part of its orbit, and four to five days to cool down as it swings away. It also exhibits a temperature inversion -- a hotter, upper layer of gas -- when it is closest to its star. What's more, the carbon chemistry of the planet seems to be behaving in unexpected ways, which the astronomers are still trying to understand.
"These planets are much hotter and more dynamic than our own Jupiter, which is sluggish by comparison. Strong winds are churning material up from below, and the chemistry is always changing," said Lewis.
Another challenge in understanding hot Jupiters lies in parsing through the data. Lewis said her team's six-day Spitzer observation left them with 2 million data points to map out while carefully removing instrument noise.
"Theories are being shot down right and left," said Nick Cowan of Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., a co-author of the HAT-P-2b study. "Right now, it's like the wild, wild west."

UFO SIGHTING IN HUDSON, MASSACHUSETTS ON NOVEMBER 19TH 2013 - TWO PULSATING ORBS, ONE WHITE/BLUE/RED/YELLOW OTHER GOLD/COPPER
When I was going from the upstairs of my home to downstairs, I happened to glance out of the front door window and noticed two very bright objects that appeared to move by the window quickly. I walked outside to get a better look thinking that they were possibly helicopters, or just something interesting to look at with my binoculars or telescope. However when I stood still outside I noticed the two objects appeared to not be moving, so I thought maybe they were just bright stars and I had observed some kind of optical illusion while moving by the window. However, before going back inside I noticed that the two objects started to slowly move again, very slowly up and to the right exactly in unison. At this time I noticed that one object was predominantly white with blue, red and greenish lightly pulsating all at the same time, while the other was mostly gold and copper flickering, with sometimes a yellow tinge. At certain times it appeared there was a very faint third object off the left of the bright white/blue object but I could not get a good enough look as it was too dim and close to the light pollution and tree line. I instantly got excited and ran inside to the house, grabbed my Canon PowerShot ELPH 510HS and quickly set it to night shot. There was also no sound of any kind; it's very quiet in my area and I can hear helicopters or jets from a great distance away before you can even see them, which made the experience very intriguing. It was very difficult to get the camera onto the objects as they kept moving and there is no optical viewfinder on the camera, only the small digital screen. I then proceeded to take 3 separate videos, one with Night Shot mode, one with Night Scene mode and the final with Long Shutter (Night) setting. I rested the camera on the side of the house to try to stabilize it as best as I could, but the objects were moving quite a lot and it was difficult to capture. Feeling that I took as much clear video as I possibly could (about 10 minutes worth), I decided to get my telescope out just to absolutely make sure it's not some strange helicopters I'm witnessing. I was luckily able to get the telescope zoomed in perfectly on the White/Blue object and it was clearly a bright white sphere with pulsating colors and it appeared to actually jump from part of the lens to the other. While trying to get the telescope on a good angle, a group of 2-3 helicopters flew overhead in the direction of the object and about 5 minutes after that 2 jets flew in the same direction, both with 2 visible exhausts close together; which reminded me of the rear of an F-15 or similar fighter jet. I tried to get my camera back out to record it but by the time the camera was ready they were behind the trees and you could only hear the engines. Hanscom Air Force Base is only about 15-20 miles from where I live and I know they have fighter aircraft, although I am unsure what their current status is as of 2010. However, I do know they are still an active military base. I went back inside to get my father who also saw exactly what I was seeing. I then went to get my brother, but when I came back outside, all of the objects were gone. Upon reviewing the videos I took, there was one clip that seemed to show what I was seeing the best (Long Shutter mode), and it actually quite clearly shows the White/Blue and Gold/Copper object instantly jump slightly to the right, in exact unison. And it is not my poor camera management as when this happened I had the camera resting against the side of the house and when I move the camera about later in the video you can see the colors streaking from the long shutter exposure time. On the other video it shows the objects moving to the left, stopping and moving to the right, and at the end of the clip you can actually hear the jets approaching. I have seen many strange objects like this in my area over the past 2 years but this is the first time I have somewhat good quality footage of the event.

Beyond the evidence there is the interpretation of the UFO experience of belief, including the works of Pope Alice, who Loxely informs 'believes she is an alien'. Indeed, the exhibition catalogue states she was born in Outer Space in 5252ABCD (but currently based in Brisbane). The artist's work includes alien figures interspersed more earth-bound idols, light, audio and images and with a strong influence from people from indigenous cultures. Other contributing artists are from across Australia.
Adam Norton is inspired by perhaps the best known UFO spot, Roswell, following reports that a flying saucer, and its occupants, was captured in 1947. Norton's Roswell Timeline links events from pre-history to the current day in a large, detailed, linear exhibit that is difficult to ignore.
Other exhibits are more 'down to earth' - or at least they may seem that way. As an eight-year old, artist James de Blass saw a UFO as an eight year old living in Tasmania, and has been influenced ever since as he produces paintings with a strong parallel universe theme. His father's actual interviews on the radio at the time are part of the evidence collection, and his mother attended the exhibition opening. It's the story from a family interested in science, but otherwise, curator Loxley describes as being not unusual, like many of the Visitors visitors. "We've had a phenomenal attendance at this exhibition.
