At the Yahoo group Frontiers of Zoology we have been having a discussion over the Orang Pendek-a discussion which does include Richard Freeman. Because of that I thought it would be a good idea to reprint this article from The Guardian (UK) which is the most recent publication on the matter.

ON THE TRAIL OF THE ORANG PENDEK, SUMATRA'S MYSTERY APE
On Friday zoologist Richard Freeman embarks on an expedition to find the elusive orang pendek. In the first of two articles, he describes the creature's possible appearance and likely evolutionary origins
If the orang pendek exists, this new species of ape may shed light on our own evolution.

The Indonesian island of Sumatra is the sixth largest island in the world. Sadly it has lost half its rainforest in the past 35 years, erased by the chainsaw to make way for palm oil and coffee plantations. Despite this, in the west of the island there are still vast tracts of forest standing, among them Kerinci Seblat National Park which covers 13,791 square kilometres - about the size of Montenegro.
It is from these forests that reports of a species of ape that walks upright and is unknown to science have been emerging for almost 100 years.
The orang pendek, "short man" in Malay, is said to be 4-5 feet tall but powerfully built with broad shoulders and long muscular arms. Sightings suggest it walks upright like a human, its body is covered with black or honey-coloured hair, and it may have a long mane of hair from its head down its back. It appears to live on the forest floor, unlike the arboreal Sumatran orang-utan which is confined to the north of the island.
The orang pendek's diet is said to be mostly fruits, vegetables and tubers, but some witnesses say they have seen it ripping open logs to get at insect larvae. Rare reports describe it eating fish and freshwater molluscs, and some early reports even have it consuming the flesh of dead rhinoceros that had fallen into pit traps.
Native people in Sumatra, including the modern Sumatrans of Malayan descent and the Orang Rimba or Kubu - the aboriginal people of Sumatra - ascribe no supernatural powers to the creature, unlike tigers, pythons and other naneks: spirit or tribal totem animals. Nevertheless, many jungle people fear the orang pendek because of its strength, even though it is not considered aggressive and will usually move away from any human it sees. It is said occasionally to use rocks and sticks as crude weapons, hurling them when it feels threatened.
Native knowledge of the creature goes back into the mists of history and there are a number of local names for it. In the south-eastern lowlands it is called sedapa or sedapak. Gugu is the name in southern Sumatra while in the Rawas district it is atu rimbu. In Bengkulu it is known as sebaba. These days the creature is reported only in the west of the island, specifically in and around Kerinci Seblat National Park.
News of the creature first reached the west in the early 20th century via Dutch colonists. In 1918, the Sumatran governor, LC Westenenk, recorded an event that took place in 1910:
A boy from Padang employed as an overseer by Mr van H- had to stake the boundaries of a piece of land for which a long lease had been applied. One day he took several coolies into the virgin forest on the Barissan Mountains near Loeboek Salasik. Suddenly he saw, some 15 metres away, a large creature, low on its feet, which ran like a man... it was very hairy and was not an orang-utan; but its face was not like an ordinary man's... "
Westenenk recorded another encounter. In 1917 a Mr Oostingh, owner of a coffee plantation at Dataran, was in the forests at the base of Boekit Kaba when he saw a figure sitting on the ground about 30 feet away. According to Oostingh:
His body was as large as a medium-sized native's and he had thick square shoulders, not sloping at all. The colour was not brown, but looked like black earth, a sort of dusty black, more grey than black. "He clearly noticed my presence. He did not so much as turn his head, but stood up on his feet: he seemed quite as tall as I (about 1.75m). Then I saw that it was not a man, and I started back, for I was not armed. The creature took several paces, without the least haste, and then, with his ludicrously long arm, grasped a sapling, which threatened to break under his weight, and quietly sprang into a tree, swinging in great leaps alternately to right and to left."
The sightings continued into the 1920s, some of them at very close range. In May 1927, a Dutch plantation worker called AHW Cramer who lived in Kerinci reported seeing an orang pendek from a distance of only 10 metres. It had long hair and black skin. The beast ran away leaving small, human-like footprints.
Also in 1927 an orang pendek was said to have been caught in a tiger trap but broke free. The traces of blood it left were examined by zoologist KW Damerman who concluded that it was not from a bear, gibbon or human.
In the 1930s interest in the creature waned, perhaps due in part to the outbreak of the second world war and the Indonesian struggle for independence that followed. It was not thrust into the public gaze again until an Englishwoman, Debbie Martyr, began her research in the late 1980s.
Martyr first visited Sumatra in July of 1989 as a travel writer, and while camped on the slopes of Mount Kerinci her guide Jamruddin pointed out areas were Sumatran rhinoceros and tiger could be seen. Then, casually, he commented that in the forested mountains east of Gunung Tujuh orang pendeks were sometimes seen. When Debbie made a sceptical comment Jamruddin told her that he had seen the orang pendek twice. He told her it was still common, but getting rarer due to the incursions of farmers.
Martyr stayed on in Sumatra and began to collect eyewitness accounts that would eventually fill several volumes. She had her own sighting in 1990.
I saw it in the middle of September; I had been out here four months. At that time I was 90% certain that there was something here, that it was not just traditional stories... When I saw it I saw an animal that didn't look like anything in any of the books I had read, films I had seen, or zoos I had seen. It did indeed walk rather like a person and that was a shock. "It was a relatively small, immensely strong, non-human primate. But it was very gracile, that was the odd thing. So if you looked at the animal you might say that it resembled a siamang or an agile gibbon on steroids! It doesn't look like an orang-utan. Their proportions are very different. It is built like a boxer, with immense upper body strength... It was a gorgeous colour, moving bipedally and trying to avoid being seen."
Martyr, together with photographer Jeremy Holden, began a 15-year search funded by Fauna and Flora International. Jeremy used camera traps set up in remote jungles but failed to capture orang pendek on film. However, he did catch a glimpse of it as he climbed over a ridge in the jungle, but the creature swiftly moved away. He only saw it from the back but noted it walked upright like a man.

"My good friend Adam Davies, together with Andrew Sanderson and Keith Townley, have found and cast orang pendek footprints, and collected hair in the Kerinci area. Primate biologist Dr David Chivers of the University of Cambridge compared the cast with those from other known primates and local animals and concluded that it was definitely an ape with a unique blend of features from gibbon, orang-utan, chimpanzee and human. "From further examination the print did not match any known primate species and I can conclude that this points towards there being a large unknown primate in the forests of Sumatra," he reported.
"Anthropologist Dr Jeffrey Meldrum at Idaho State University said the cast was probably a primate print, but suggested it might be a handprint. Having seen orang pendek tracks in the field, however, I believe Davies's track is a footprint rather than a handprint, and from my experience of the great apes I can say that the tracks of the orang pendek are quite distinct from any known species of ape. Dr Hans Brunner, an expert on mammal hair, compared the hairs with those of other primates and local animals and concluded that they originated from a previously undocumented species of primate.
"On Friday I will describe my own three expeditions to Sumatra, during which we interviewed witnesses, set camera traps and examined footprints. On the latest of these expeditions, in 2009, one of the group saw the creature. I believe the orang pendek is a great ape closely related to the orang-utan - in other words an undiscovered species of ponginae. In all the interviews I have conducted with eyewitnesses, they describe what sounds like an ape rather than a hominin: long arms, massive shoulders, little neck, much body hair, short legs. But why, in a jungle full of trees, does the orang pendek walk upright and live on the ground? Martyr suggested that the creature became bipedal in the wake of the eruption of the Toba supervolcano around 75,000 years ago that would have stripped the island of its trees. However, this does not explain how the Sumatran orang-utan survived. I believe the orang pendek's distinct evolutionary origins are older than this. When they come to the forest floor, male Sumatran orang-utan walk on two legs, but up in the trees they will also walk erect along branches.
Bipedalism was once thought to have developed on the plains of East Africa when hominids first left the jungles to exploit new food sources around 5 million years ago. Standing erect, according to the theory, gave them a better view of potential predators. The vervet monkey demonstrates this kind of behaviour, rearing up to look about it for danger. But now it seems that bipedalism may have begun to evolve in the jungles. During a year-long study of the Sumatran orang-utans of Gunung Leuser National Park, palaeoanthropologist Susannah Thorpe of the University of Birmingham spotted apes in the trees on almost 3,000 occasions, including numerous instances were they walked erect. In 75% of these cases they maintained balance with their hands, and for over 90% of the time their legs were stiff, unlike the bent-knee, bent-hip shuffle of chimps and gorillas, which also sometimes stand upright in trees. The apes stood erect mainly to reach for fruit while on fairly narrow branches. Thorpe postulated that the straight-legged posture helped them balance in the same way as a gymnast on a trampoline.
Palaeoanthropologist Bernard Wood of George Washington University in Washington DC commented on the findings: "Most of us had assumed that the only place where it's sensible to be bipedal is on the ground. A handful of fossil species dating from 5 million to 28 million years old, mostly before chimpanzees split from hominins, showed signs of upright posture and bipedalism, but the evidence has been pretty flakey." Wood thinks Thorpe's findings put these fossil apes in a new light and that they may have been true bipeds that evolved bipedalism to reach for fruit. As the jungles shrank they took up bipedal walking on the ground while the gorillas and chimpanzees took up knuckle walking. The fossils in question were of course African, but could something similar have occurred in the jungles of Asia, ultimately giving rise to a number of bipedal ape species? Sunda was a large land mass that once incorporated Sumatra, Borneo, Java, the surrounding islands and the Malayan peninsula and connected them all to mainland Asia.
As melting glaciers flooded the oceans 19,000 years ago, sea levels rose and the huge land mass became the islands we know today. As I have mentioned, the two known orang-utan species had already speciated some 400,000 years ago. We do not know why this occurred but the more gracile Sumatran form, and the robust Bornean, separated. The robust form populated the eastern island of Borneo and the gracile the western island of Sumatra. A larger form, Pongo hooijeri, the size of a modern gorilla and presumably a ground dweller, existed further north in what is now mainland Asia. Closely related and known only from its teeth and jaws was the huge Gigantopithecus blacki. This latter species has left fossils in India, Vietnam and China - some dating as recently as 300,000 years ago. Due to the wide shape of the jawbone it has been postulated that Gigantopithecus was a biped, with the neck placed directly under the skull. If this is correct, and if the rest of the animal was built on the same scale, then Gigantopithecus would have stood 10 feet tall. Some believe that the creature is not extinct but survives in parts of India, Tibet, China, the Himalayas and elsewhere, known as the larger type of yeti.
All of the above, including modern orang-utans, seem to have descended from a genus of ancient apes known as Sivapithecus. They flourished 12.5 to 8.5 million years ago and had bodies shaped like chimpanzees, but heads more like those of modern orang-utans. Another genus Lufengpithecus arose around 10 million years ago. These may have descended from an earlier form of Sivapithecus. Morphologically they seem to fall between Sivapithecus and modern orang-utans. It is from Lufengpithecus that modern orangs may have evolved. I think that when the speciation of the modern orangs began, they split not into two but three species. The robust P. pygmaeus, the more gracile and more upright P. abelii and a third, smaller terrestrial species that we today know as the orang pendek. If we can prove this creature exists, not only will it be an astounding zoological discovery but it may give us more clues to how bipedalism evolved in our own species.

-There are minor exceptions I would make to Richard's statements but none of them of any consequence to his thesis. In particular I question the status and clasification of "Pongo hooijeri" which I do not believe to be legitimately a Pongo at all, and which I suspect to be the ancestor to the more recent mainland-Asian ape reports such as the Yeren and some Yetis, as well as a wide variety of less-well-known forms. There is also a reported giant ape on Sumatra, the Orang Gadang or Great-Big-Man.It should also be noted that the living lesser apes including gibbons and the siamangs are habitual bipeds to begin with: the primitive condition of apes (and the Sivapithecines) seems to have been as bipeds, and later apes became quadrupeds later and by use of different postures in Africa and Asia. I note that the report by Oostingh is includee in as an Orang Pendek here: if so, then it is an unusually large individual.
The main problem with this version of the Orang Pendek (as opposed to the more human types) is to establish that it exists and it exists as a species of Pongo, but different from the known species. There will necessaruily have to be a wrangle over that, and different experts also diagree on the amount of genetic distance to prove a separate species. So I'm afraid even if and when we get good samples of it with clear DNA sequencing available, classification is going to be a headache for some time to come still.

Evidence of UFO encounters through mankind's history -- from prehistoric cave paintings, to Medieval frescoes, to Renaissance art that depict strange objects in the sky.
While technically a UFO refers to any unidentified flying object, in modern popular culture the term UFO has generally become synonymous with alien spacecraft;however, the term ETV (ExtraTerrestrial Vehicle) is sometimes used to separate this explanation of UFOs from totally earthbound explanations.
Proponents argue that because these objects appear to be technological and not natural phenomena and are alleged to display flight characteristics or have shapes seemingly unknown to conventional technology, the conclusion is that they must not be from Earth. Though UFO sightings have occurred throughout recorded history, modern interest in them dates from World War II (see foo fighter), further fueled in the late 1940s by Kenneth Arnold's report of a close encounter, which led to coining of the term flying saucer, and the Roswell UFO incident. Since then governments have investigated UFO reports, often from a military perspective, and UFO researchers have investigated, written about, and created organizations devoted to the subject. One such investigation, the UK's Project Condign, made public in 2006, attributed unaccountable UFO sightings to a hitherto unknown and scientifically unexplained "plasma field." It also concluded that Russian, former Soviet Republics, and Chinese authorities had made a co-ordinated effort to understand the UFO phenomenon and that military organizations, particularly in Russia, had done "considerably more work (than is evident from open sources)" on military applications stemming from their UFO research. The report also noted that "several aircraft have been destroyed and at least four pilots have been killed 'chasing UFOs'."
UFOs are sometimes an element of conspiracy theories in which governments are allegedly intentionally "covering up" the existence of aliens by removing physical evidence of their presence, or even collaborating with extraterrestrial beings. There are many versions of this story; some are exclusive, while others overlap with various other conspiracy theories.
In the U.S., an opinion poll conducted in 1997 suggested that 80% of Americans believed the U.S. government was withholding such information. Various notables have also expressed such views. Some examples are astronauts Gordon Cooper and Edgar Mitchell, Senator Barry Goldwater, Vice Admiral Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter (the first CIA director), Lord Hill-Norton (former British Chief of Defense Staff and NATO head), the 1999 French COMETA study by various French generals and aerospace experts, and Yves Sillard (former director of CNES, new director of French UFO research organization GEIPAN).
It has also been suggested by a few paranormal authors that all or most human technology and culture is based on extraterrestrial contact.

Perhaps the most significant of those other sightings was a United Airlines crew sighting of nine more disc-like objects over Idaho on the evening of July 4. At the time, this sighting was even more widely reported than Arnold's and lent considerable credence to Arnold's report. For the next few days most American newspapers were filled with front-page stories[citation needed] of the new "flying saucers" or "flying discs." Starting with official debunkery that began the night of July 8 with the Roswell UFO incident, reports rapidly tapered off, ending the first big U.S. UFO wave. Over several years in the 1960s, American UFO researcher Ted Bloecher[13] (aided by physicist James E. McDonald) discovered 853 flying disc sightings that year from 140 newspapers from Canada, Washington D.C, and every U.S. state save Montana. This was more UFO reports for 1947 than most researchers ever suspected. They were characterized by "extreme rates of climb [and] maneuverability," general lack of noise, absence of trail, occasional formation flying, and "evasive" behavior "when sighted or contacted by friendly aircraft and radar," suggesting either manual, automatic, or remote control. It was thus recommended in late September 1947 that an official Air Force investigation be set up to investigate the phenomenon.[15] This led to the creation of the Air Force's Project Sign at the end of 1947, which became Project Grudge at the end of 1948, and then Project Blue Book in 1952. Blue Book closed down in 1970, ending the official Air Force UFO investigations.Use of "UFO" instead of "flying saucer" was first suggested in 1952 by Capt. Edward J. Ruppelt, the first director of Project Blue Book, who felt that "flying saucer" did not reflect the diversity of the sightings. Ruppelt suggested that "UFO" should be pronounced as a word - "you-foe". However it is generally pronounced by forming each letter: "U.F.O." His term was quickly adopted by the Air Force, which also briefly used "UFOB" circa 1954. (See next paragraph.) Ruppelt recounted his experiences with Project Blue Book in his memoir, The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects (1956), also the first book to use the term.[16]Air Force Regulation 200-2, issued in 1954, defined an Unidentified Flying Object (UFOB) as "any airborne object which by performance, aerodynamic characteristics, or unusual features, does not conform to any presently known aircraft or missile type, or which cannot be positively identified as a familiar object." The regulation also said UFOBs were to be investigated as a "possible threat to the security of the United States" and "to determine technical aspects involved." Furthermore, Air Force personnel were directed not to discuss unexplained cases with the press.[17][18][19]In Canada, the Department of National Defence has dealt with reports, sightings and investigations of UFOs across Canada. In addition to conducting investigations into crop circles in Duhamel, Alberta, it still identifies the Falcon Lake incident in Manitoba and the Shag Harbour incident in Nova Scotia as "unsolved".[20]

Gilroy found accounts of the creature dating back to pre-colonial times, with stories told of children being attacked by the "moolyewonk."

Published on Aug 1, 2012 by PLANETunderATTACKThis footage was shot in 720p High-Definition video from the back deck of my home on the shore of lake Huron during daylight. I am witness to many strange objects in the skies and quite often do not have time to record them. Many things simply move too quickly and the "sighting" is over in a matter of seconds. Recently, I have begun to set my camera up and simply let it run in an attempt to capture these bizarre and fast-moving objects. On this day, I had a great success. The camera is stationary, laying flat on its' back using a 5x OPTICAL zoom. There are no special optical filters and no night-vision gear being used. Although I was expecting to eventually capture some of the white orbs or spheres that pass over head, I captured this incredible footage of a high-speed rod-type UFO, instead. Four minutes after the appearance of the rod-type UFO, one of the strange white planes that we occasionally see passed through the footage. I have broken down and analyzed that in this video, as well. Although the "fake plane" footage might be dubious or inconclusive, the UFO footage is perfect and in my opinion absolutely solid and undeniable proof. STRONG LANGUAGE WARNING. As always, please comment with your polite and insightful opinions.

The fall of 1948 had a great deal of significance for the study of the UFO problem in the military. And this wasn't just the smashing of the extraterrestrial hypothesis of Project SIGN. Colonel McCoy had surely told higher authorities in the Pentagon that an extraterrestrial Estimate was coming by the month of August sometime. No intelligence communication "surprise" is tolerated if there is any time to avoid it. When this hit the Pentagon, wheels began turning.
One thing should be dispensed with right at the beginning: that is the viewpoint that no such thing as an extraterrestrial Estimate ever happened. We have three intelligence operatives who are on record as having seen a copy of it {Edward Ruppelt; Harry Woo of the Photo Interpretation Center team which analyzed the Tremonton films and presented that analysis to the Robertson Panel; and Dewey Fournet, who occupied the UFO desk in the Ruppelt era}. One of these {Fournet} gave a succinct affidavit to NICAP once he was out of the service. It is reproduced [from an originally-signed copy out of NICAP files] at the left. It also mentions that he himself did a study of [details not mentioned but known elsewhere] UFO motions, which was never "published", even internally, and denied as to having ever existed by the Air Force. The Estimate was said to be ordered to be destroyed, but that word has a funny context when you are speaking about secret documents copies may be destroyed but the reports seem to remain in files nevertheless.
"People are of differing opinions as to when the Estimate actually was written. It doesn't make any difference but gives people something to argue about. the controversy seems in part due to Donald Keyhoe remarking that he saw/heard about the Estimate being composed in August 1948. I doubt it. McCoy would likely have given the Pentagon early warning about this document that early, but the real presentation of the thing would be later. Again it's of no importance, because either way it began a mini-project in the Pentagon to counter it. Even then, there seemed to be some lackadaisical behavior in Pentagon Intel until a full-blown confrontation was imminent in the late fall. By that time Jere Boggs with help [surprisingly] from the Office of Naval" Intelligence had constructed what I call the "Nemesis of The Estimate", Air Intelligence Report 100-203-79. [The title page, contents, and summary of which appear on the right.] This set up a situation in the Pentagon where two competing "estimates" [both in unfinished form] were making rounds in high places. The battle over the ETH was taking place not in one climactic confrontation but over weeks of time.
In the middle of this came the October 1 Fargo, ND "dogfight" incident, known most commonly as the "Gorman case". George Gorman, national guard pilot, engaged in a tricky chase with what seemed to be a small luminous source, sphere-like in nature. Another pilot, passenger, and tower control watched parts of this as well. Gorman, rightly or wrongly, had a strong feeling that the light source moved according to some form of intelligence. Project SIGN got right on this. Their investigation had an element in it which shows just what they were thinking: they had the plane tested for radioactivity. They were looking for the advanced ["extraterrestrial"] power source which was powering the Chiles-Whitted device and the disks. They didn't find it--no excess radioactivity. Captain Robert Sneider's report stated the thinking in question form: "from the technical analysis standpoint, to what degree is it possible to draw upon rumored present-day attainments [foreign or domestic] in the fields of equipment, propulsion, fuels, electronics (radar control), atomic research, and any other applicable field, to account for the aforestated flying characteristics attributed this small missile.....Is it plausible to assume possible interplanetary visitations?" SIGN was not doubting the Gorman case. They saw it as one more example of probable ET technology.
The Pentagon and the Boggs/Porter/Hearn [Hearn was Boggs' immediate boss] school were not amused. At this time probably occurred a mild form of the famous "slapping down" of the ETH for explaining the disks. The documents at the right tell part of that tale. [Hopefully you'll be able to read them upon clicking]. The letter in the upper left is from General Cabell telling SIGN what its job is. It admits that everyone has made the case that there is something really flying around that we don't understand. It specifically says that SIGN must exert more effort to find out what they are. But in a veiled threat, it says: give us an estimate that says "domestic" or "foreign". And we want a reply now. Albert Deyarmond then writes SIGN's response for McCoy's signature. This response, given the heat that they're taking over the ET estimate, is interesting. They begin by saying that it's obvious that things are flying around, and then brag about everything that they've been doing to do their job. They don't come out directly in the face of Cabell, but refuse to give up on the ET idea ["the possibility that the reported objects are vehicles from another planet has not been ignored."] But, with political-correctness in this formal letter, they say that they have no "tangible" [read: parts of a crashed disk] to prove that. They follow that remark up, however by saying that they have found a relationship between disk waves and the approach of planetary bodies. They are, in my opinion, doing everything they can to tell the Pentagon:we're not backing off the ETH.
SIGN in their "optimism"/stubbornness was really naive. Can you imagine what Cabell was thinking when he thought of going to Vandenberg and telling him: oh, Van, we've concluded that flying disks are from other planets, and it's your job to decide how you're going to break it to the President and the rest of the military. And, uh, we don't have any tangible evidence to back that up, like a little alien in a jar. To think that the Pentagon would accept such an estimate [even if it seemed correct--and there was plenty of room to debate] was, in a way, stunning. Still, SIGN was making it obvious that they were not going to cave in. This caused there to be scheduled on November 12th, at the National Bureau of Standards, a gunfight at the OK corral, between SIGN and the analysis division of the Pentagon. We don't know who attended except that Robert Sneider brought the case for the defense [with, doubtless, the formally written-up ET Estimate in hand] and Jere Boggs brought the case for the prosecution [with AIR-100-203-79 in hand]. As we know, SIGN lost.
This defeat [probably in front of many of the players that we've been mentioning--McCoy, Clingerman, most of SIGN, USAF Collections {Garrett, Taylor et al}, USAF Analysis {Moore, Porter, Hearn et al}, Charles Cabell, and very probably, Vandenberg himself. ] was the likely moment when Vandenberg did the famous and final "slapping down". This "Slapping" was a hard slap indeed. It came with the requirement that, from now on, SIGN would have to send all reports on to other areas of Air Force Intelligence [ex. the Scientific Advisory Board, in the person of George Valley of MIT, bottom left] AND to the Office of Naval Intelligence [from where it would get to the Office of Naval Research and to our favorite idiot there, Urner Liddel]. How embarrassing can it get! SIGN was being told: you can not be trusted to make a proper estimate, and we are assigning "adult supervision" to you. After the holocaust was over, Alfred Loedding had reason to visit SAB advisor Irving Langmuir [In the collage at the upper right] and was given an ego-spanking there too. Loedding said years later: "my stock in Washington was never so low".
"The effect at SIGN was dramatic. Whether all of these things had direct connection to the battle at the NBS or not, every senior member of the intelligence stack relating to SIGN shortly was removed. Both McCoy and Clingerman were given "school" assignments, and afterwards never returned to Wright-Pat in any capacity. Loedding, Deyarmond, Truettner stayed at AMC but were removed from the project. Project officer Sneider disappeared from my radar, but I know that he no longer had anything to do with the project. In a few months only the two lowest ranks on the team were left to head the new Project Grudge. George Towles was a civilian. The military "chief" was Lieutenant Howard W. Smith. SIGN's demise was probably inevitable, but it brought down the most talented group of people ever assigned to the Air Force's UFO beat. As engineers they, even if you feel they got it wrong, tried to analyze things scientifically/technically and this was rarely ever done again. From this point forward, "sympathy" towards UFOs was hard to express at Wright-Pat [although during the 1952 year one could do so in the Pentagon]. And the Pentagon had left the situation in an unstable position, for the winning side had promulgated a doctrine that the disks were real, and likely or at least possibly the products of advances on the aeronautical thinking of people like the Horten Brothers [of Germany in WW2 a picture of Reimar Horten is below.] That hypothesis could not stand as time went on, even though the AF kept giving it a try. Lieutenant Smith [seen as a cocky lieutenant during WW2 in the bottom picture] was called to Washington in 1949 or 1950 to brief people on UFOs and was in a meeting with Colonel Hearn. Hearn showed him the "Nemesis" and asked Smith what he thought of it. Smith said that he thought that it was worthless and illogical. That" turned out to be the right answer. A much valued UFO friend is violinist music-teacher Christopher Trubridge of 83 Portway, Warminster. With a Praktica Super TL2 camera equipped with a telephoto lens f: 200mm 1:35.5 and using 400 ASA - Din. black and white high-speed film, he took several 'shots' at 10.11 a.m. on Sunday 3 April 1977. Weather conditions were good, clear, with only a few wisps of cloud fouling parts of the sunny sky. The wind was westerly, direction of aeroform NE to SW. Location? Warminster, on a small road off the main Westbury highway leading to the local village of Upton Scudamore. This is a mile and a half from our town. At the time of the sighting, the sun was slightly obscured by drifting cloud. The UFO passed low overhead and was very large in dimension; first appearing as a round ball-shape and, growing closer, seeming to change shape in strange whirling motion to a cylindrical or cigar-form.
Chris, who felt a sharp tingling on exposed flesh as the giant structure was above him, said: "It was absolutely huge as it passed overhead. I had difficulty in keeping the object in the eye of the camera lens as it seemed to give off a hazy effect. As it continued on its flight path SW it seemed to have developed like the end-on view my pictures show, after turning. This grew very large for a short while, then began to diminish very quickly until I became momentarily blinded from looking at the object so intently into the glare of the sky."
Mr. Trubridge has been a keen Ufologist for several years at Warminster and had taken scores of photos of UFOs previously - in vain. Chief Insp. Maurice Petty, Warminster Police, attests freely to a number of UFO incidents reported by motorists encountering the 'spectacular unknown' in the skies and duly logged in police records locally. Truth cannot be stifled... Douglas Chaundy and wife Jenny from Weston-super-Mare are other reliable witnesses among thousands worldwide who have seen flying mysteries at Warminster, since their modern-times advent on Christmas Day 1964.

UFO 'S ARE COMMONLY SIGHTED AND REPORTED!
An interesting find I read about recently with UFO sightings is that they are reported commonly all the time and by all sorts of people.. Also to support all these sightings, usually when one person calls the police about seeing a UFO, many people are doing the same, from different locations.. I was impressed to hear how often the Police and FBI are called to investigate the lights or UFO however because they are so common and cannot work it out themselves the investigation usually ends very soon..
So if you are in UFO territory and you see a policeman for some reason looking up at the sky, they may very well be looking for a reported UFO sighting..?
