Well, once again I was wrong. David Klinghoffer published an opinion piece in the LA Times that argued that belief in the paranormal is not just, well, normal, but actually good for you.
Klinghoffer begins his tale by telling us that the Hasidic rabbi who circumcised his son gave him an amulet "for protection against demons." Klinghoffer was amused but "glad to have it." That's because he believes that we all hunger for what William James referred to as "the reality of the unseen" (but if it's unseen, how do we know it's real?), or what Puritan (and witch-hunter) Cotton Mather termed "the invisible world." You would think that approvingly quoting a witch hunter would be a bit embarrassing, but apparently you would be wrong.
Klinghoffer cites poll after poll showing that, for instance, 48% of Americans believe in ghosts, and a whopping 22% claim to have seen one (really? Did he have chains?). These surveys show an increase in the acceptance of some paranormal phenomena, as the percentage of Americans believing in alien abductions is now at 40%, up from 25% in the 1980s (I wonder how many claim to actually having been abducted and, more importantly, if they had sexual advances made on them by the aliens). Klinghoffer doesn't think this is a problem, far from it, he is glad that his fellow Americans long for the unseeable unseen.
As the article progresses we learn that our hero regularly listens to "Coast to Coast AM," a radio program where people get to call in to share their twilight zone stories. Not surprisingly, then, Klinghoffer approves of conservative writer Russell Kirk, "who valued the paranormal for its suggestion that reality consists of more than mundane material processes." But what if reality does not consist of more than material processes? And what exactly is "mundane" about the material world? (I'm not talking Madonna here.) Klinghoffer "get[s] the persistent sense that something profound is affirmed by the eerie accounts on [the Coast to Coast] show." And, pray, what exactly, or even approximately, would this "profound affirmation" consist of? Alas, Klinghoffer doesn't elaborate.
But he does tell us that scientific "explanations" of religious and supernatural beliefs just don't cut it. He claims that evolutionary psychology is about a bunch of "just so" stories that are largely unfalsifiable. I'm with him on that, as I've made clear several times on this blog. But immediately thereafter we read: "Another possibility is that the human need to believe in the unseen world itself points to, while not proving, the reality of hidden dimensions." Oh? And how on earth is this any better than a just-so story? At least evolutionary psychology doesn't invoke fairy tales. I mean, if falsifiability is the standard here, how exactly does Klinghoffer plan to test claims of the supernatural?
It is near the end of the article that we get to the real problem, according to the author. You see, the issue is "materialism," the philosophical assumption that matter (and energy) is all there is. This is a "prejudice," according to Klinghoffer, a prejudice that apparently doesn't sit well with "the human hunger for a vigorous, unapologetic interface with the unknown." I call that interface science, and it happens to be based on the eminently reasonable assumption of materialism. I call what Klinghoffer is looking for a simplistic delusion no more worthy of an adult human being than a persistent belief in Santa Clause (as the immortal Chico Marx said in A Night at the Opera, "Ah, you're joking! There is no Sanity Clause"). Then again, much light is thrown on the whole article if we can stomach arriving to the byline at the end: turns out, surprise surprise, that Klinghoffer is a "senior fellow" at the Intelligent Design so-called think tank, the Discovery Institute (do they have junior fellows? Or is it structured like the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where all the correspondents are "senior"?). I guess they are still pursuing their infamous "wedge" strategy to dislodge the evil doctrine of materialism from our culture, reason and evidence be damned.

Sorry it's so shaky, but it's snowing and cold outside & I was in a hurry, & barefooted in the snow. :-/I am a 15+ year ufologist in the Memphis Metro area, & although I have seen things I can't explain, this is the first one with evidence worthy of reporting from my own experiences. For this particular incident, I've been seeing bright lights in that same location for several nights in the last week, but it was after I went to bed and not compelling enough to warrant running outside. It snowed yesterday, so it made it easier to see last night, and the craft was much closer, much brighter, and very visible. I ran outside at 12:46AM CST and began filming. It was hovering very low over an area with corn fields. I observed it hovering for about 20 minutes, but it was too cold outside and I ran out straight from bed with no shoes on in the snow, therefore, I could only film for a short time. After about 20 minutes it seemed to just flight path was hovering and pulsating lights that appeared to have a red glow at times. It appeared to be one very large triangular aircraft, and it was hovering so low that it had a 3-D effect when viewing. I would estimate it to have been about the size of a football field, or larger. There were times when it appeared to have ejected smaller orb lights, but that is unclear. It was difficult to tell from my vantage point whether it was part of the larger craft, or additional smaller craft. I started filming one particular orb that wasn't moving very fast and my wife had seen another one zooming across the sky. After replaying it on the computer we noticed that I managed to capture 100's of them, some small and some big. At the 2:10--2:12 mark there's like a cylinder craft that darts across the screen, that wasn't visible to the naked eye...very cool sighting today!

In two recent blog entries accepted by my friend Rich Reynolds, I addressed Jose Antonio Caravaca's "Distortion Theory".
Among my "arguments" shared in private with Jos'e, I pointed to the fact UFO/IFO cases share the very same "components," no matter what the narrations/tales by the witnesses present as low or high strangeness for ufologists.
In other words, the elements alleged by witnesses are more or less the same between identified cases (IFO) and non-identified cases (UFO): speed, size, colors, physical "evidence," physiological effects or impressions, animals reacting, cars stopping, "et cetera".
There is, so to speak, a sort of "twin corpora" when you examine the two categories (UFO and IFO).
There is no valid reason for UFO-Skeptics (like me) to invoke exotic causes for UFO cases as explicative variable(s).
The difference between IFO and UFO cases could be only a different of status (identified/non-identified status), but not a difference about the nature of the causes and processes (Socio-Psychological to be short) involved between the two corpora.
Like other disparate corpora, such as planes, cars, domestic accidents/incidents, conflagrations, murders, rapes, and so on, they contain their own not-solved cases (residual cases); if they are not solved, it is not due to an "exotic or Fortean" cause or entities.
It is the inept processing why such cases are not explained.
In other prosaic or conventional actions (i.e., bad investigations, lack of the luck to identify the prosa"ic candidate, lack of information, bad documentation, lack of experts who could solve the case) the same processes are involved between explained and non-explained cases.
To have residual cases in similar corpora, is logical and statistically inherent.
Why take different approaches to UFO corpora? And why consider "UFO residual cases" differently?
In essence, the ETH would be "useless" to explain UFO sightings or events; they are potentially reducible to composite and conventional causes I listed in the bibliography to my previous article in Rich's Blog (only for the French texts, sorry).
Concerning RR3, take a look (for "one "example) to an Ian Ridpath article about a Spanish case I chose as a "wink" to Jos'e Caravaca):

Car's lights began to fail, a protagonist was sick... elements we have in several not-solved UFO case's.
For this one, it seems the UFO was Venus... (I have a plethora of cases where the UFO was in fact Venus or the Moon or space-re-entry gear.)
In IFO cases we find more or less the very same "components" as in the narrations of UFO cases.
The ETH is unnecessary to explain UFO cases when were take a look on IFOlogy (the cases where UFOs are presented as part of the ETH" a priori" but are actually explained otherwise afterwards).
Why make the UFO phenomena so "complex" as ufologists do, when they (ufologists) could take into account what we learn from IFOlogy?

Did anyone see the Sirius documentary and can confirm that the body was reported as human?
Even if this was human, they are saying that this being lived for 6-8 years after birth. First time I have heard of a 6 inch human. Shortest humans ever recorded are about 20 inches tall.

It was hailed as proof of alien life, a mummified visitor from another planet.
Ten years after the remains of a six-inch 'space alien' were first discovered, they have been confirmed as 'human' by Stanford scientists in a new documentary film Sirius.
Since the remains of the small humanoid - known as the 'Atacama Humanoid' and nicknamed Ata - were discovered in Chile's Atacama Desert 10 years ago there has been much speculation about its origins.
Theories have included that the bones were those of an aborted fetus, or a monkey, or even an alien that had crash-landed on earth.

'There is absolutely no doubt that the specimen is an actual organism and that it is not a hoax of any kind.
'This fact has been confirmed by Dr. Nolan and Dr. Lachman at Stanford.'
In the weeks leading up to Monday's premier of Sirius, UFO enthusiasts had grown increasingly excited that the film could announce a major breakthrough in the search for extra-terrestrial life forms.
Experts say the small skeleton certainly bears many of the hallmarks of what we have come to believe aliens look like, in particular a large head overshadowing a small body.
According to Chilean local newspaper, a man called Oscar Munoz found the remain on Oct. 19, 2003 when he was looking for objects of historical value in La Noria, a ghost town in the Atacama Desert.
Near an abandoned church, Munoz found a white cloth containing, according to the newspaper, 'a strange skeleton no bigger than 15cm [the size of a pen].
It was a creature with hard teeth, a bulging head with an additional odd bulge on top.
Its body was scaly and of dark color. Unlike humans, it had nine ribs.
