There have certainly been points in human history where civilization was much more endangered. World War Two and the Cuban Missile Crisis are two examples. Aliens didn't show up then, so why should they now?
It could be that from the alien perspective it's not so much a case of humanity on the ropes and needing help, as it is humanity in an important phase of development. Despite world economic woes our technology has drawn us together, the threat of all-out nuclear war has lessened considerably in recent years and we are showing signs of greater global cooperation. I remember a large fire ball shooting through the sky and then suddenly stopped. At first we thought it was a meteor. It only took MAYBE a minute for the fire to disappear revealing a silver saucer shaped flying object just hovering maybe 500 yards away. There was no noise from the craft. The center looked like it may have had windows and looked like it was internally illuminated. We could see what looked like figures at the windows but it was just a little too far away. I remember being extremely scared when I saw the transformation from fireball to saucer. There were colored lights on the bottom. We gathered up our things, as did other people at the lake and went to our cars. My dad drove along the dirt road and the craft followed the cars. Once we hit the highway, I watched as it took off at a very high rate of speed into the night sky. I was wandering if anyone else ever reported this? And maybe that's really how it goes. As creative as human beings appear to be, maybe we're really over-thinking the whole thing. In fact, I'm pretty sure we are.
But what if something else is going on here -- something less apparent and more complex? What if those who witness UFOs aren't really seeing the object as a whole? You might ask, Fine, I'll bite. Where's the rest of it then?" A decent question, for sure, but my answer might be, "It's right there in front of you!"
Consider that UFOs (the truly unexplained kind, mind you) are not of this dimension. You've probably heard some of this before, the idea that UFOs are not extraterrestrial, but extra-dimensional, although this isn't really about that speculation as much as it's about a possible explanation for the seemingly simplistic shapes we see darting around our skies.
Take, for instance, a 2 dimensional world and imagine there are 2 dimensional people living in this world. They would be bound by their dimensional laws, meaning that they could move "left", "right", "forward", and "backward" -- but they could not move "up" or "down", as their world would be quite flat (and would actually have no height at all. This is extremely difficult to visualize, so just think of the world as a vast sheet of paper). How would a 3 dimensional object, such as a ball or a cube, appear to these 2D people if it entered their world? Keep in mind that by entering their world, the object would have to 'land' since it would not be visible at all if it were floating above (remember, they can't see up!). Having no sense of depth or height, this object would not appear to them at all like it would appear to you and I. Instead, what they might observe is a flat circle (or a flat square, if it were a cube), which would seem rather plain with the only mystery being its sudden appearance out of "nowhere."
Perhaps we are experiencing a similar dilemma when it comes to UFOs. If these objects come from a dimension higher than our own, we would see them much differently than a native of that dimension would. One can only guess what a higher dimensional object could look like in its true form, as it is rather impossible from our perspective (though representations have been illustrated). We have no way of knowing or observing an extra-dimensional UFO's 'true' shape -- not as we would know the shape of a car or building in our world. This could account for the apparent simplicity of some UFOs, or help explain the morphing, more fluid-like shapes of others. So, when it comes to sightings, what we may be witnessing is an extra-dimensional object in only 3 dimensions, giving it the shape of a disc, orb, etc.

Boeing will be the first commercial company to carry a NASA astronaut to space in July 2017 under a contract with the US space agency, followed by its competitor SpaceX, officials said Monday.
NASA is funneling billions of dollars to both companies so that they can replace American access to the orbiting International Space Station after the US space shuttle program was retired in 2011.
The announcement of 4.2 billion for Boeing and 2.6 billion for SpaceX was made in September 2014.
However, a legal challenge by Sierra Nevada -- which was developing a space-shuttle-like vehicle called Dream Chaser and was closed out of the competition -- meant that officials could not reveal many details until now.
The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) denied the protest by Sierra Nevada earlier this month, allowing NASA and its partners to speak publicly about the contracts and future plans for test flights.
Commercial Crew Program Manager Kathy Lueders said at a press conference in Houston, Texas that Boeing would be the first to make two contracted missions to carry NASA astronauts, since it has completed two milestones so far, and SpaceX just one.
"Our goal is to have two robust providers," Lueders added.

A NASA astronaut and a Boeing test pilot will make the first crewed test flight on the spacecraft called Crew Space Transportation-100, or CST-100 for short, in July 2017, said John Elbon, Boeing's vice president and general manager of space exploration.
"The first services mission then will begin in December of '17," he told reporters, referring to the first official trip to the International Space Station with crew on board.
SpaceX's upgraded Dragon crew vehicle is on track for an unmanned test flight in 2016, followed by a test flight including crew on board in early 2017, said vice president Gwynne Shotwell, who did not give specific dates.
In 2012, California-based SpaceX became the first commercial company to deliver supplies to the International Space Station with its Dragon cargo ship, which is being modified to become a crew capsule.

Since the 30-year space shuttle program ended in 2011, the United States has relied on Russia's Soyuz capsules for astronaut transport at a cost of 70 million per seat.

Another key benefit for the United States is ending its costly dependence on the Russian space agency.

Both Boeing and SpaceX must show they can successfully complete a test flight with one astronaut aboard before moving on to between two and six more flights contracted with NASA to deliver astronauts to and from the space station.
The spacecraft will launch from Cape Canaveral in Florida.
Boeing's acorn-shaped space capsule, the CST-100, is designed to be re-used up to 10 times, and SpaceX's sleek white Dragon Version Two, or Dragon V2, is also a reusable space capsule.
Both can carry up to seven people to the space station, which circles the planet in low-Earth orbit.
