WASHINGTON (Reuter) - Some people may have a paranormal
ability to visualize hidden or distant objects without actually
seeing them, a CIA-commissioned study made public Tuesday
reported.
But both the Central Intelligence Agency and the academic
authors of the study said that the possible extrasensory
perception, called remote viewing, had not been shown to be
useful for intelligence gathering.
The study, by the American Institutes for Research, a
private Washington social science research firm, said
'statistically significant' results had been observed in
laboratory experiments to test remote viewing.
The CIA commissioned the study at the request of the Senate
Appropriations Committee, keen to know whether more government
research into parapsychology was warranted to give U.S. spy
agencies an extra arrow in their quiver.
But the study, dated Sept. 29 and made public by the CIA
after it was cited by ABC News, found that remote viewing had
not been shown to help in collecting secrets for national
security purposes.
Quoting unidentified 'users' of images generated by
supposed remote viewers, the study's authors said the material
had never provided data 'sufficiently valuable or compelling so
that action was taken as a result' by U.S. officials.
David Christian, a CIA spokesman, said the spy agency, like
the authors of the report, had concluded that no further
official U.S. research into remote viewing was warranted.
'We think the intelligence community shouldn't pursue
research on this and that it is best left to the private
sector,' he said.
Christian said the CIA had carried out research into remote
viewing in the 1970s but had determined it to be unpromising and
dropped the idea.
The CIA program, codenamed 'Stargate,' was initiated in
response to concerns about a 'psychic gap' with the old Soviet
Union, according to Jessica Utts, a University of California,
Davis, statistics professor who worked on the CIA-commissioned
study.
ABC News reported that the CIA and other U.S. intelligence
outfits had hired supposed remote viewers 'to spy on hundreds
of political and military targets,' including the holding of 52
American hostages for 444 days in Iran after the embassy
takeover in November, 1979.
ABC said people claiming to be capable of remote viewing
also had been hired by U.S. spy agencies to pinpoint downed U.S.
and Soviet aircraft, as well as to communicate with submerged
submarines.
Christian declined to discuss examples of CIA use of
so-called psychic spying, but said most of its research in the
1970s was 'experimental.' The Defense Intelligence Agency,
which coordinates military intelligence, had no comment.
Utts, who specializes in evaluating parapsychology research,
said the data she reviewed for the CIA study had produced the
most credible evidence to date that humans were capable of
paranormal psychic feats.
'At this stage, using the standards applied to any other
area of science, the case for psychic functioning has been
scientifically proven,' she said in a telephone interview.

As a retired Police Officer who served nearly 30 years with the West Midlands Policeand whose relatives are in the Force, I feel very angry about having to witness the indescribable scenes of public disorder that have and are taking place in the major Cities of the UK, when once again the Police stand between civilisation and anarchy.
However I am at a loss understand the attitude of this present Government towards reducing Police numbers, as part of a cost cutting exercise. Their policies have induced many Police Officers to feel that not only their jobs but their livelihood are at risk, the morale of the Police has plummeted. Whilst the Government have announced that front line jobs are not at risk, perhaps they may care to advise how officers from specialised Units can still continue to run these units efficiently? When there is not enough personnel to even run child care protection units.
I personally know some senior Officers who work up to 60-70hours a week on salary who have been told that their pension contributions will be raised soon and their wages will be reduced. One Officer tells me of a another cost cutting exercise involving scrapping the bonus for being on call and that it has been replaced with a 60pence per hour rate( with tax =36pence per hour ) and this is for a senior Officer!
Over the last few weeks the public will have wondered why so few Police cars have been seen on patrol. This is another cost cutting exercise involving saving petrol 'Hot spots' is what they are labelled. The response times have been changed from bad to worse because the staff has been depleted and the use of Police Vehicles on the road have been cut by drastically. When the cost cutting started Police Horses were done away withto save money, now we seem to need them judging from the events that are taking place in London. And now we need more officers! But crime continues to surge upwards!
Senior Police Officers are very worried about voicing their disapprovals, in case they lose their jobs. I am not a Politician or man of great intellect but a man of common sense and its this thread of logic that tells me that a strong Government will need a strong Police force. So the writing is already on the wall! Can they not see the King is threadbare and soon will have no clothes? Hopefully David Cameron and Theresa May will see what they are doing to this great Country and why it is that need to implement a strong force by increasing not decreasing Police numbers.
On the UFO front I spoke to Dennis Plunkett from the British Flying Saucer Bureau, he is a gentleman and has been researching UFOs for many years. He to always asks the same question when will they finally accept that 'UFO's exist.

Nigel Frapple was walking home from a dance, at Wincanton, Somerset - a regular journey, at 2.00 am. 20th May, 1954 - when he noticed an orange glow, low in the sky, which he took to be a farm, or house, on fire. Curious, he stopped near a farm gate, a short distance down the road, just past Red lynch crossroads, and crouched down to have a closer look.
"I was astonished to see this dome shaped object hovering approximately 40 feet off the ground in one of the nearby fields, a couple of hundred yards away. It had a cockpit in the centre, with three portholes, and was glowing with violet light. The outside of the 'craft' consisted of what looked like glass panelling, gun metal grey in colour.
At one end I could see an orange 'ball', cascading with light - like the disco lights you now see. The curious thing was that it didn't appear to be attached to anything - just suspended in the air. Inside the cockpit were shadowy movements, indicating the presence of something, or someone, moving behind the light, spilling out of the portholes. After five minutes, or so, it moved as if it sensed me watching it. I stood up and took a couple of steps forward.
To my surprise, it tilted and shot off across the sky. When I arrived home in an extremely agitated state and told my brother what had happened, and later reported the incident to the police, at Bruton, 'all hell then let loose'. I was besieged by reporters from local and National newspapers, including the BBC, who asked me to show them the field. Nigel made some enquires in the area and spoke to Mr. Henry Toogood, who lived in a cottage lower down the hill. He confirmed having also seen the 'craft' that evening, but from underneath. "'It looked like a huge dinner plate, with something resembling metal balls set into the underneath.'"
About a week later, Nigel received a visit from two smartly dressed men, who came to his house. "They didn't show any ID but said they were from London. One of them was in his late fifties and wore a grey suit - he did all the talking. His companion was dressed in a dark pinstripe suit, wearing a bowler hat. He never said a word to me but kept his horrible" 'black eyes' focused upon me in a most disconcerting way after I told them what had happened. Presuming they were from the Air Ministry, or branch of Government, the eldest of the two said, 'If you persist in telling these silly stories, we'll have to take you somewhere where you can't tell them anymore

As a result of Newspaper publicity regarding this incident, a Mrs. Doreen Heffer, from Five Oaks, Shobley, Ringwood, Hampshire, wrote to the 'Western Gazette' Newspaper, 4th June, 1954. "Sir, with reference to your account of the 'Mystery of the Air', I should like to confirm that I saw exactly the same thing here, although not at such close range, about 11 o'clock at night. At first a huge glow appeared, which I thought might be a forest fire. When it topped the crest of a hill, I could see it was something moving forward. I thought a huge plane was on fire and expected something to drop off, but as it moved along, perfectly evenly on a straight course and did not lose height in any way, it left me baffled. It was exactly as your Somerset reader described - a yellow/orange glow, with a deeper shade which I imagine was the thing itself. LAST WEEK, SCIENTISTS MADE FRONT PAGE HEADLINES WHEN THEY ANNOUNCED THAT THE ROVER CURRENTLY EXPLORING MARS HAD SNIFFED METHANE - AN ORGANIC COMPOUND THAT JUST MIGHT BE THE WASTE PRODUCT OF MARTIAN LIFE, OR NOT. THE REASON THIS HASN'T BEEN DECLARED THE FINDING OF THE DECADE, OR EVEN THE CENTURY, IS THAT THERE ARE A FEW PROCESSES THAT CAN PRODUCE METHANE IN THE ABSENCE OF LIFE. STILL, SCIENTISTS ARE ENCOURAGED BECAUSE THEY CAN AT LEAST ENVISION TESTS THAT IN THE FUTURE MIGHT DISTINGUISH BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCED METHANE FROM THAT MADE BY GEOLOGIC PROCESSES ALONE.
So far, robotic exploration of the Martian surface reveals nothing but bad real estate - it's cold, dry, lacking in atmospheric pressure and subject to sterilizing radiation. But below ground might be another story. In recent years scientists have found life underground on our planet in the form of organisms that might just be tough enough to survive on MARS. And so the investigation continues. Experts on Mars and the search for extraterrestrial life helped me compose a few reasons their quest is worth pursuing.
1: IN EXPERIMENTS, SCIENTISTS DEMONSTRATED THAT METHANE-PRODUCING MICROBES CAN LIVE UNDER MARS-LIKE CONDITIONS.
In his lab at the UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS, biologist Timothy Kral subjects bacteria to conditions similar to the presumed sub-surface of Mars. He found that one group could survive for up to 120 days despite the extreme cold, dryness and low pressure - single-celled organisms that are called methanogens because they excrete methane.
Kral said he and other biologist have suspected since the early 1990s that if anything could survive on Mars, it would be this type of life. "They are ancient and simple organisms" he said. They flourished here on Earth before plants and animals and could remain after we are gone.
Methanogens don't like oxygen - it's toxic to them - so when the Earth's atmosphere became rich in oxygen 2.4 billion years ago, they moved underground. (Methane producing organisms also live in the innards of animals, such as humans and cows, but this is an unlikely scenario for Mars.)
These organisms have simple appetites. Unlike plants, they need no sunlight. Unlike animals, they have no need to eat other living things. They live off just carbon dioxide, water and hydrogen.
Mars has carbon dioxide and hydrogen. There's frozen water, and evidence that water had flowed on the surface in the past. With such a tantalizing possibility before them that methanogens might survive on Mars, scientists have been looking for Martian methane for years.
A few years ago, a group led by Michael Mumma at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center ANNOUNCED THEY'D FOUND IT using remote sensing. That finding was met with skepticism, but rover that's currently exploring Mars, called Curiosity, is equipped to get a much closer look. The Curiosity team first announced no methane earlier this year. Then they did an about face.
2: IT USED TO BE NICER ON MARS: All the water on the surface of Mars is frozen, but as scientists continue to explore, evidence keeps mounting that the climate was a lot warmer several billion years ago. Geologic features look a lot like dry rivers and lake beds, suggesting it was warm enough for liquid water to flow, at least periodically. Mars is close enough to the sun that such warmth is perfectly plausible if it once had an atmosphere with sufficient carbon dioxide - a so-called greenhouse gas that prevents our planet from freezing. The crucial difference between our planet and Mars is that Earth is big enough for gravity to hold a stable atmosphere. Mars is smaller, so its atmosphere appears to have drifted off into space.
3: LIFE BEGAN VERY EARLY IN EARTH'S HISTORY. Chemical traces of life indicate that it had already spread around the globe by 3.7 billion years ago, which is not long after our planet would have cooled off from an initial molten state. That suggests that life doesn't need eons of time to form once favorable conditions arise. Mars was only nice for a short time, but it might have been long enough for life to have emerged.
4: MARS AND EARTH HAVE EXCHANGED STUFF. WE HAVE A NUMBER OF METEORITES FROM MARS. WE KNOW THEIR ORIGIN BECAUSE THEY CARRY A RETURN ADDRESS IN THE FORM OF LITTLE BUBBLES OF TRAPPED GAS. SCIENTISTS CAN TELL THAT TRAPPED GAS MATCHES THE COMPOSITION OF THE THIN MARTIAN ATMOSPHERE AS MEASURED BY VARIOUS NASA LANDERS. "IT'S CLEAR THE TRADE ROUTES EXIST," SAID ANDREW KNOLL KNL +0.94%, A BIOLOGIST AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY.
Our planet is a bigger target, and so it's more likely life would have started there and landed here, but Earth rocks must have landed on Mars as well.
The oldest known Mars rock to have made the journey, called ALH84001 has been the subject of intense study since it was discovered in Antarctica in 1984. In the 1990s, NASA scientists announced possible signs of fossil life in this rock - a discovery that was indeed too good to be true. But there's still a wealth of Martian history written into ALH84001, and this week scientists from theUNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO USED IT TO FILL IN MORE GAPS THE GEOLOGIC AND HYDROLOGIC HISTORY OF MARS.
Knoll said it might not be easy for a bug adapted to Mars to survive on Earth. He also noted that on Earth, methanogens don't live completely off the grid. They get "subsidies", he said - nutrients from the rest of the food chain.
Many scientists also hold out the possibility that life had a separate and independent origin on Mars - a finding that would be even more profound and exciting than finding Earth-type life had been transported between the planets.
5: WE HAVE TO LOOK. Our understanding of the nature of life would be transformed if we had a second example. All life on Earth sprung from a common origin. Not only does all life use the same system for transferring information - DNA and its relative RNA - but many of the specific sequences of code are the same in bacteria, plants, and animals.
If life arose independently somewhere else, we don't know if it would use DNA or something similar. To qualify as life, something would have to replicate itself, transfer some kind of information to subsequent generations, and undergo Darwinian evolution. But what kind of system might do that? Finding a second example of life, "would be a great moment," said Harvard's Knoll. Right now scientists can't agree on exactly how one would construct a universal definition of life that would encompass extraterrestrials without incorporating crystals and other non-living systems that nevertheless reproduce and show order and structure.
Society may invest billions in future missions that eventually rule out life on our neighboring planet. In science, getting at the truth isn't a failure, even if it's not the truth we had wished for. A dead Mars might reveal to us that life is more fragile than we'd imagined. That might not be the answer we'd hoped for, but it's worth knowing.

DUBLIN, Texas - Anyone looking for answers about the recent mysterious lights in the Texas sky left here disappointed Saturday. But the big meeting hosted by the Mutual UFO Network delivered in plenty of other ways: COURTNEY PERRY/DMN Decked out in his best alien attire, Dudley accompanies owner Parks Blackwell of Fort Worth to a Texas Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) meeting Saturday at the Rotary Building in Dublin, Texas. MUFON investigators took reports from people who claimed to have seen unidentified flying objects in nearby Stephenville.
Jokers in tinfoil hats, check. Funny UFO T-shirts, check. Crop circle conspiracy theorists, check. Fresh popcorn and Dublin's real-sugar Dr Pepper dispensed by the friendly folks from the local Rotary Club, check.
And even a hint of science and a sense that the cheerful mob scene might actually contribute to knowledge, if not definitive explanations.
"I think a lot of people saw the same things," said Laura Washburn of nearby Glen Rose.
Her son, Shane, saw something odd in the sky on the nights of Dec. 31 and Jan. 2. They spent a couple of hours in the crowd of more than 500 who packed the Dublin Rotary Club building, listening to many others telling their stories. ALSO ONLINE

"Hearing so many other people takes away the feeling that I don't want to be the only one, the one that people say is crazy," Ms. Washburn said.
The meeting was triggered by local reports of slow-moving, glowing objects in the sky the night of Jan. 8. Three men told their stories to Angelia Joiner, a reporter for the Stephenville Empire-Tribune.
"The people were so genuine and so credible," Ms. Joiner said Saturday. "You could tell they really saw something."
Plus, it was a good tale that she figured her readers would like. She was right about that. Once her first story ran, other people came forward with similar stories. And once word of the reports traveled beyond the area, the world wanted to know more.
Every major news network has run stories about the lights in the sky near Stephenville. Two witnesses, plus Ms. Joiner, were remote guests Friday on Larry King Live.
MUFON was founded in 1969 and has chapters all over the U.S. The Colorado-based organization is a club for UFO buffs, but it's also a network of amateur investigators who try to evaluate every report they receive of something odd in the sky.
MUFON announced last week that it would hold a meeting to interview witnesses of the Stephenville-area lights.
The first site for the meeting was a livestock sales barn. That humble location didn't sit well with the Rotarians of Dublin, about 10 minutes down the road from Stephenville.
"It's kinda like we have company coming and we need to take care of them," said Pat Leatherwood, a member of the Dublin Rotary Club. "Whether or not you believe it, you can still be nice."
Texas MUFON officials gratefully accepted the Rotarians' offer of a comfortable place to talk to witnesses. By the end of Saturday afternoon, more than 200 people had formally filed their stories.
MUFON investigators are a cross between the Ghostbusters of the movie and the amateur detectives of the Scooby-Doo cartoons. Like the Ghostbusters, they know they're taking on a task with a high giggle factor.
But like Velma and Scooby's other cartoon companions, MUFON investigators take a scientific approach.
They look for clues, interview witnesses, analyze evidence. And like the Scoobies teenage detectives on the TV show, MUFON usually concludes that there's nothing unworldly about the sightings it investigates.
MUFON certifies its official investigators. They're trained to recognize unusual cloud patters, star formations, bugs flying close to the camera, light reflecting from the lens and myriad other ways an odd image can show up on a photo.
Robert Powell of Austin is MUFON's national director of research. He was in Dublin on Saturday to help out with the investigation.
What he was hoping to do was find stories that matched - people in different places who saw something similar at about the same time. But he knew that many of the stories would turn out to be something mundane.
"An unidentified flying object can turn out to be an airplane, and then it's identified," he said.
Steve Hudgeons of Fort Worth is MUFON's senior investigator for Texas. Mr. Hudgeons, 58, makes his living as a project manager for a construction company.
A few days before the big meeting, he described some of the problems his investigators would surely find. The biggest, ironically, is the massive publicity. Witnesses had a chance to hear from one another and talk among themselves. Often in such situations, people's memories shift, Mr. Hudgeons said. The other problem, he said, was that the intense media attention would pull people from the woodwork who have nothing useful to contribute.
"We are going to get people down there who have aluminum foil on their heads," he said with a sigh. "We always get that."
Which they did. They also got more witnesses in one place than MUFON had ever tried to interview. Like hooking a fire hose to a garden hose, the crowd blew out the normal careful interview process that MUFON tries to conduct about every report it gets.
One woman had a story about something she saw in 1957. Others had accounts from last month or last year.
Their descriptions of the lights ranged from included an aspirin with lights around the edges, to glowing orbs, to a wedge-shaped row of lights to and an enormous classic movie-special-effects flying saucer. Some witnesses were fuzzy about the time of their sighting. Others weren't clear about which way they were looking. But several of the witnesses were able to answer many of the long series of questions on the MUFON investigation form. How is their vision? Their hearing? Where were they at the time? Which direction did they look? Were they near an airport? Did what they see seem to hover? Wobble? Appear solid? Have fuzzy edges?
Over the next couple of months, MUFON's investigators plan to follow up with some of the witnesses and eventually produce a report about any patterns they were able to find in the accounts.
In the meantime, the locals are mostly having fun with the story. A Stephenville hotel has a goofy image of a green cartoon alien in a hotel suite sitting by the front desk. "He's on the fourth floor" of the three-story hotel, guests are told. A taco joint plays on the team colors of nearby Tarleton State University by claiming "aliens prefer purple tacos."
But some people are worried that the story will leave an image of their area as being filled with a bunch of UFO-seeing nuts.
Chris Baker, 37, lives in Dublin. He's seen only one unusual sight in the sky lately: "Just snow."
"I'm hoping after this weekend is over that people will start to forget about it," he said. "I don't think there is enough to it to make it a tourist attraction like Glen Rose and dinosaurs."
MAYBE IT CAME FROM THE DOG STAR

Once the excitement dies down in Stephenville, two scientists at area universities plan to take a scholarly look at whatever lighted the sky over Erath County this month.
Michael Hibbs, associate professor of math and physics at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, and Ron DiIulio, director of astronomy lab programs for the University of North Texas in Denton, said Saturday that they will gather data and interview witnesses to try to figure out what people saw.
"This is a chance for us to put together some science as to why," Hibbs said. "This is pretty cool. No, it's way cool."
DiIulio and Hibbs agree that people saw a UFO of sorts because it is unidentified and it appeared to be flying. They are especially interested in this sighting because of the number of people who reported seeing it.
"We know they saw something," Hibbs said. "We just want to know what it is."
DiIulio said he was not surprised that no one took photos of the UFO, since it was at night, it was cold and many people, especially older ones, don't carry cameras.
"We need more data," DiIulio said. "We want either an identified object or an unidentified one, but not a misidentified flying object."
Both scientists agreed that the photograph on the front page of Friday's "Star-Telegram "was not of a UFO. It was one of DiIulio's MFOs.
"From what I see by looking at this photo, it's a sun dog," DiIulio said.
Hibbs agreed. "It definitely was a sun dog," Hibbs said. "That photo has nothing to do with the Stephenville incident."
A truck driver took the photo using his cellphone camera on Jan. 8 on Interstate 20 near Cisco.
A sun dog is a little-known atmospheric phenomenon caused by ice crystals hanging in the air, reflecting sunlight through high clouds, DiIulio said. Cloud movements appear to make the sun dog move, too.
"You nearly always see them 22 degrees -- or 'two fists' -- on either side of the sun," he said. It usually happens near sunset.
DiIulio said American Indians used to report sun dogs.
"It's almost like a rainbow," DiIulio said. "It's pretty neat. Some people don't see the color, just the bright light."
He and Hibbs said they want to work with witnesses by going back to where the witnesses saw the lights. DiIulio and Hibbs will also look at the descriptions from Saturday's event in Dublin. And they're not scoffing.
"This is really exciting," Hibbs said. "Who would have guessed this would happen in Stephenville, Texas?"
STOP, LOOK, TAKE NOTES
Ron DiIulio, director of astronomy lab programs for the University of North Texas, offers these tips on what to do if you spot a UFO. DiIulio is also Jet Propulsion Laboratories-NASA's solar system ambassador, helping interpret science for the public.
Note immediate changes, such as if the object suddenly reverses or turns 90 degrees.
Know your compass points, and note the direction you are looking.
Count how far from north the object is using "fists." Stretch out your arm and level your fist on the horizon. Bring up your other fist. Cross your first arm over the second, keeping your arms together, and count how many fists left or right of north the object is. Nine fists left of north is northwest, etc.
In a similar way, find out how high the object is. Stretch out one arm and level a fist on the horizon. Then put the other fist on top of the first fist. Continue to stack fists until they reach the object. Two fists equal 20 degrees, nine fists equal 90 degrees, etc.

DUBLIN -- It was a crowded cacophony of confusion.
On Saturday afternoon, about 50 people who saw impossibly bright lights in the skies about nearby Stephenville 12 days ago gathered in Dublin to talk about what they saw with interviewers from the Mutual UFO Network.
The witnesses were swept into whirlpools of media representatives carrying video cameras and at least one "posse" from a Dallas radio station, whose members were intent on blocking the front door of the meeting room to take pictures of themselves wearing aluminum-foil hats. And there were the circling curiosity seekers.
Despite about 400 pushing and shoving onlookers, seven MUFON investigators gathered a lot of information from respectable sources, said Kenneth Cherry of Keller, director of the organization's Texas chapter.
But did they uncover a visitation from alien beings?
"We believe there is some sort of phenomenon in action here," Cherry said. "We see a pattern. But it will take months to investigate."
Several dozen people living in or near Stephenville, including an Erath County constable and several business owners, insist that around Jan. 8, they saw a large silent object flying lower to the ground and faster than an airplane would.
They also said the object's lights changed configuration, unlike those of a plane. Some reported seeing it chased by fighter jets.
On Saturday, Steve Allen of Glen Rose, who said he was a pilot, described what he saw:
"We were sitting around the campfire. I looked off to the east, and we saw several sets of lights coming toward us very fast. They were brighter than the glare from welding.
"The first time we saw it, the duration was three minutes; then it started slowing down and passed us, and the lights in the back reformed into an arc shape, and they would flash on and off with no particular pattern. Then those changed into two vertical lines. It was totally silent."
Before talking to investigators, witnesses filled out forms that included questions about the object's direction, distance and flying behavior. They were asked to sketch what they saw. Then they sat down to be interviewed by MUFON investigators for about 15 minutes each.
"I wanted to come today because this is too important to stay silent about," said James Huse of Stephenville. "It hovered above my house."
Cherry said MUFON will study the testimony for several months to a year before releasing any findings. And even then, don't expect an announcement about green men in an alien mother ship.
MUFON doesn't use that sort of terminology. At most, the group will make a statement that whatever happened at Stephenville can be explained, or it can't.
That's it.
"We do not promote the existence of alien ships," Cherry said. "All we are trying to do is figure out if we can explain it or not, and then we'll let the chips fall where they may."
MUFON welcomed Saturday's event, Cherry said, because it made some people more comfortable talking about sightings, it got the organization's name into public view and it added to the body of data collected by MUFON, which was organized in 1969.

A German newspaper has scooped us.
When mysterious lights were reported in Stephenville, the Regensburg "ShortNews "bannered the news with the headline:
"ALIEN INVASION"
"End of Times Near"
The report went on to explain how the good people of Erath County have spent the last 12 days scouring the skies for unidentified flying objects after several people said they got buzzed Jan. 8 by something bright and about the size of a flying Wal-Mart.
As a report, the "ShortNews" comes up -- well, short.
No photos. Not even a shot of Tony Romo with Jessica hovering.
Plus, the report never explains exactly what a big, bright illusion in Texas has to do with the end of the world.
If a higher power wanted to warn us about impending Armageddon, would the warning start in the sky over the Loco Coyote Grill?
As it turns out, the bright light was probably a weather phenomenon called a "superior mirage."
Even folks who believe in the impending end of the world don't think it will involve UFOs or anything in a cellphone picture on "Anderson Cooper 360".
To check, I went directly to the local experts on end-of-the-world delusions: "Endtime" magazine.
Pentecostal Pastor Irvin Baxter of Garland founded "Endtime" 18 years ago in Indiana. It has 30,000 readers, even though the title prediction has never come true.
Four years ago, Baxter moved "Endtime" to Texas, where most of his readers live somewhere between reality and the Book of Revelation.
"Endtime" connects world events to biblical predictions. It's sort of a "U.S. News and End of the World Report."
On his MySpace.com page, Baxter delivers his urgent message.
"We are in the endtime right now," he writes.
"If you would like to subscribe to my magazine, "Endtime" magazine, please call... "
Notably, although he thinks the world is coming to an end, that doesn't stop him from selling a six-year subscription (59).
But even Baxter says not to worry about UFOs.
"I don't know whether I even believe in them," he said by phone from Outer Garland.
"Could there be life out there? Sure. But as far as whether they're part of any biblical prophecy -- I see no evidence of that."
Baxter sticks to more worldly fears:
ID cards are the work of the devil, or at least the shadow world government.
A select few "men who run the world" control the Vatican, communism and the environmental movement.
Secret microchips track us everywhere.
"These are things we can prove," he said.
Uh -- OK.
People who fear UFOs "don't really have a solid understanding of prophecy," he said. "We don't want to be part of any groundless speculation."
Of course not.
Closer to Earth -- not to mention Erath County -- the Rev. Kirk Plaxco leads the more grounded Stephenville Ministerial Association.
"There is definitely a fascination with the 'end times,'" he said by phone from the First Church of the Nazarene. "But I don't think a UFO sighting or a bright light in the sky is anything to worry about."
He and his fellow Stephenville pastors have a task this morning. They'll remind worshippers that all of us will someday meet our end, but nobody is licensed to predict the end of the world.
"If this is the 'end times,' then it really doesn't do us a lot of good to waste time hemming and hawing about it," Plaxco said. "We are told to live day to day for Jesus Christ. It doesn't matter which day."
Plaxco said "sensationalists" use events such as the UFO sightings near Stephenville to "get up and spout off."
But he also sees divine guidance in our fears.
"God put the fear in our hearts," he said, "so we would be hungry for answers."

This is the LATEST UFO SIGHTING that I have personally witnessed in Johnstown, PA from my own front yard.

Right around 9:20 PM I walked out on my front porch to have a smoke and I catch a glimpse of an orange bright light in the sky just along the tree tops on the mountain ridge about 200 yards from my front yard. The strange thing about this is that it is the third time I have seen a bright orange orb UFO in almost the exact same location from my home. The last sighting was back on August 10th of this year, on that occasion the orange orb hovered for a few minutes before vanishing into the night sky. This time was a bit different, the orange UFO soared just above the tree line at a very fast pace. Too fast for me to get my camera out and catch it on video or even snap a picture.
As I stood in my front yard pleading for the UFO to come back so I can get this thing on video I started to scan the sky and almost instantly saw this Triangle UFO coming over the ridge from behind my house heading at a perfect angle to intercept the orange orb UFO. This thing was about the size of jet airliner from front to back and was darker than the sky above it. I could clearly see the triangular shape with 3 bright lights on each corner. The lights illuminated like the bluish LED headlights you see on cars the past few years. Much to my surprise I could actually hear the UFO make a slight whooshing sound as it passed about 700 feet above my head. It was low enough to see that there were no red, green, or blue aviation lights on the craft.

This time I already had my iPhone out and was able to catch this thing on video. Unfortunately the iPhone is not very good at taking pictures or video in low light situations. The iPhone also makes the UFO seem very far away, much further away than in real life. With these 2 bad characteristics of the iPhone working against me it was very hard to even see the UFO on my screen. So it was very hard to even keep the subject in view as I was recording.
I will admit that the video I did get is not that great but I did get the UFO on video. I would have to say the first 5 seconds or so is the best and would be the best time to pause and zoom in on the UFO to get a good look at it. The picture above is a screen capture from the first 3 seconds of the video, zoomed in and cropped. If you take a good look you can almost make out the triangular outline, could this possibly be a TR-3B?

I have witnessed several UFO SIGHTINGS within the past year or so without even leaving my house and I am determined to get good quality proof. I have noticed a trend of the best times to start looking for them and promised myself to be better prepared. I will now have my digital camera at hand at all times and will no longer attempt to record anything that remotely looks like a UFO with my iPhone unless it's in the middle of a bright sunny day.
With so many UFO SIGHTINGS in my local area this past year it makes me wonder if the UFO activity is getting greater or if I am just more aware of their presence. In either case UFOS are here and nobody could ever convince me that they are not. Once you witness these unearthly crafts with your own eyes you will have no doubt that they exist.

UFO SIGHTING IN INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI ON JULY 4TH 2013 - RESEMBLED CHINESE FLOATING LANTERN, ONLY MUCH LARGER. CANDLE-LIKE FLICKERING LIGHT FROM WITHIN.
While taking video of the neighborhood's fireworks, I noted a light that seemed to be neither a plane (there was one of those and it looked very different), nor a helicopter (I've seen those regularly), nor the fireworks I was trying to tape. The only way I can describe it is, it looked like one of those Chinese lanterns that float up into the air when released, with a flickering candle inside a bag. I thought that's what it was, and that someone had gotten creative with their particular Fourth of July display. But after a few moments I realized the bag would have to be awfully big to be seen at that distance. It wasn't that unnerving; in fact the fireworks I'd come out to observe distracted me a couple of times. But it seemed to drift, only it repeatedly approached the area as if curious about the fireworks, then retreated, using the same apparent "drifting" motion. From my vantage point, it seemed to be over the nearby Hawthorne Place apartment complex, more or less; sometimes a little past it. When I went out later in the evening, after the fireworks were long over (about 1:00 a.m.), the object was long gone as well. To be honest with you, I may or may not have had a traumatic encounter with "something" in the past. There is a "punch biopsy" mark on my right shin just below the knee, which my late parents swore they had never taken me for such a procedure. (It appeared in childhood.) In the early 1990's, I began having flashbacks to something, I still don't know what, but whatever it was was frightening. **The only reason I tell you this is, that's one of the things that was very odd about this "ufo" (if I can use that term) which I'm reporting now. Looking at it, I felt calm, and even thought it was quite beautiful. With my history, you'd think that if I believed I was looking at a "UFO", I'd be under the bed wetting myself and crying for Mommie two minutes later. But that was not the case. I'm reporting only one witness, me, because I didn't talk to the neighbors; they were pretty intent on blowing things up and cheering about it at the time. Besides, I was in my pajamas & wanted to get back inside--and make sure my cats weren't in there popping Valiums or anything. (lol) Well, thanks for listening. I hope this info is useful for you in some way.
