More than 65 years after Roswell became the top location in UFOlogy, believers in UFOs have come to be seen as a little... kooky. We may want to believe, but most of us go through our lives safe in the knowledge that we're the sane ones - and the people who think aliens have visited earth are clearly silly, misguided and delusional.

Tell that to Thomas Mantell. He was a WWII ace pilot, honored with the Distinguished Flying Cross for courageous action and an Air Medal for heroism, who continued his military career with the Kentucky Air National Guard. It is believed he was also the first person to die while chasing a UFO.
Mantell was one of four Kentucky Air National Guard pilots already in the air on January 7, 1948, when the men in the base's control tower saw a strange object in the sky. It hovered for a long time, and then quickly climbed to 10,000 feet. Mantell and his fellow pilots were told to follow it. As the object continued to climb, too high for a human without supplementary oxygen, the other pilots called off their pursuit. But Mantell continued on, determined to figure out what he was chasing.
Mantell never reached the UFO - at 25,000 feet, his plane spiraled into a dive, ending in a fatal crash. Twenty minutes later, the UFO disappeared without a trace. The assumption was that Mantell flew too high and didn't have enough oxygen to breathe - so he blacked out and lost control of the plane. But according to the sensational headlines in the next day's newspapers, he had been shot down by "magnetic rays," or killed by aliens, or fallen victim to the extreme radiation emanating from the UFO.
What really happened at 25,000 feet is something we'll never know - Mantell took the events of his last minutes to his grave. We can't say for sure what the UFO was, either. The government explained it as a weather balloon - a new way of explaining away UFO activity at the time, even if it sounds trite today. But without further evidence - unlikely to show up now, 65 years later - we'll never know if that explanation was legitimate or a government cover-up for something they could explain no better than we can.
The one thing we can say without hesitation is that Thomas Mantell, the first known person to die while investigating a UFO sighting, was no kook. He was a war hero and a well-respected pilot - one who saw something he couldn't explain and died in pursuit of the truth.

Last month, when The Christian Science Monitor decided to uncork another UFOs-are-stupid piece, it didn't even bother to pick up the phone. Instead, it dusted off some two-year-old quotes that Christine Pulliam of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics made to National Public Radio. It was a tired old yawner about mirages and how "extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof."

To be fair, it's doubtful The Monitor even heard of Pulliam's H-SCA colleague, Dr. Rudy Schild. It probably didn't know he performed detective work on celestial puzzles such as wormholes and black holes, or that his research had produced more than 200 published scientific papers. But were it aware that Schild's curiosity had also led him to study UFOs, or that he used to confer with the late Pulitzer Prize-winning Harvard Med School psychiatrist John Mack - the alien abduction expert - no doubt it would've run screaming in the opposite direction.
Nevertheless, Schild decided to stick his neck out this week with an endorsement of Leslie Kean's UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record. If you don't think that takes a little brass, even in a tenured position, consider the fact that another scientist who also publicly lended his support to the same book declined to elaborate further with De Void. And no wonder.
"We've got 300 scientists here studying everything you can think of. Everything but UFOs," the Harvard astronomer tells De Void. "I've developed a schizoid personality. There's Rudolph M. Schild, and then there's the UFO Rudy Schild."
Schild has never had a problem with attempting to connect UFO propulsion systems to the oblique engines of astrophysics. He lectures at UFO conferences about it. But within academia, Schild has already discussed the adjustments he'd be willing to make if his public lectures become an embarrassment for administrators.
"I don't have an axe to grind, I'm not an experiencer, I don't have any UFOs in my pocket," he says. "But it's totally unacceptable for me to raise my hand in a(n academic) seminar room and ask about UFOs. I would just as soon keep quiet about it."
So why go on record - again - this week?
"I know there are some safety in the sky issues raised in the book," Schild says, "but they are trivial and minor compared with what we're losing on an intellectual level. We are losing an understanding of how profound and how deep the universe really is than is presently understood."
Schild commends Kean's work, and the international players she brings to the table. But he suspects after the initial run of publicity, the climate of receptivity will remain unaltered.
"I appreciate what Leslie's done. She's put in a lot of hard work and she's careful not to get into government conspiracies," he says. "I hope it brings us closer to the truth, I really do. But the forces opposed to it are too powerful.
"What the French are doing, the Russians, China - it doesn't make any difference. Our government's official position is self-contradictory and absurd. They're lying to the American people. And everybody knows it."
Schild's prediction: Only a new generation can end the blackout. "I wish I could be more upbeat and positive," he says. "But this society is progressing one funeral at a time."

A new study co-authored by the Georgia Institute of Technology indicates that clay minerals, rocks that usually form when water is present for long periods of time, cover a larger portion of Mars than previously thought. In fact, Assistant Professor James Wray and the research team say clays were in some of the rocks studied by Opportunity when it landed at Eagle crater in 2004. The rover only detected acidic sulfates and has since driven about 22 miles to Endeavour Crater, an area of the planet Wray pinpointed for clays in 2009.

The project, which was led by Eldar Noe Dobrea of the Planetary Science Institute, identified the clay minerals using a spectroscopic analysis from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The research shows that clays also exist in the Meridiani plains that Opportunity rolled over as it trekked toward its current position.
"It's not a surprise that Opportunity didn't find clays while exploring," said Wray, a faculty member in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "We didn't know they existed on Mars until after the rover arrived. Opportunity doesn't have the same tools that have proven so effective for detecting clays from orbit."
The clay signatures near Eagle crater are very weak, especially compared to those along the rim and inside Endeavour crater. Wray believes clays could have been more plentiful in the past, but Mars' volcanic, acidic history has probably eliminated some of them.
"It was also surprising to find clays in geologically younger terrain than the sulfates," said Dobrea. Current theories of Martian geological history suggest that clays, a product of aqueous alteration, actually formed early on when the planet's waters were more alkaline. As the water acidified due to volcanism, the dominant alteration mineralogy became sulfates. "This forces us to rethink our current hypotheses of the history of water on Mars," he added.
Even though Opportunity has reached an area believed to contain rich clay deposits, the odds are still stacked against it. Opportunity was supposed to survive for only three months. It's still going strong nine years later, but the rover's two mineralogical instruments don't work anymore. Instead, Opportunity must take pictures of rocks with its panoramic camera and analyze targets with a spectrometer to try and determine the composition of rock layers.
"So far, we've only been able to identify areas of clay deposits from orbit," said Wray. "If Opportunity can find a sample and give us a closer look, we should be able to determine how the rock was formed, such as in a deep lake, shallow pond or volcanic system."
As for the other rover on the other side of Mars, Curiosity's instruments are better equipped to search for signs of past or current conditions for habitable life, thanks in part to Opportunity. Wray is a member of Curiosity's science team.
The study is published online in the current edition of Geophysical Research Letters.

Holcombe cited a classified CIA communication from the Kennedy era that reads, in part, when conditions become nonconductive for growth in the environment and Washington cannot be influenced any further, it should be "wet."
Since "wet" was Soviet code for "assassination," Holcombe believed that this could be CIA code for a plot to kill Kennedy. Because he was considering telling the world that aliens existed.

The most recent of those proposals is to test some aspects of space to space power beaming, a prospective technology with a long history but a very short resume. Power beaming has long been touted as a means of enabling solar power satellites to collect and transfer free and ridiculously abundant solar power in orbit to receiving stations on the ground, generally by means of microwave transmission. Coming from the other direction, beamed power is one of the key enabling technologies in the deployment of space elevators, and was the subject of a NASA Centennial Challenge in 2009. When used in space to space applications, it holds the potential of separating, or "unbundling" one or more of the physical systems aboard a spacecraft, and thereby achieving a meaningful savings in mass or complexity by transferring it from the spacecraft itself to a space station, or other (relatively) fixed asset which need not be accelerated at great expense. The benefits could range from the modest gains of allowing more efficient use of available mass for new and better instruments in a small satellite, to permitting other spacecraft to travel farther and faster than otherwise possible, or enable new missions altogether. For example, early advocates in the field envisioned large space based lasers fixed on a departing spacecraft, providing acceleration from a great distance by using the beams to heat a working medium to provide thrust. Today, with a profusion of working examples of electrical propulsion, and growing list of more exotic variations such as VASIMR, beamed energy holds the potential for solving some of the more vexing mass problems and unleashing the potential of higher thrust electrical propulsion. Other extrapolations suggest the possibility of something which closely resembles one of the staples of science fiction; a tractor or repulser beam effect. A few of us in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area (along with some from California and Arizona) are now planning to have a First "Underground Base" conference in the town of Dulce, New Mexico next March. The tentative date for this unusual conference right in the town of Dulce will be Sunday, March 29, from 10 a.m.
The location of this one-day conference will be the Best Western Jicarilla Inn. The conference room, unfortunately, can accommodate only about 25 people the most, but, with extra chairs, it is possible to squeeze in about 35 people. Anyway this unprecedented conference in Dulce is entitled: DULCE BASE, FACT OR FICTION?
We are planning, of course, to invite some of the residents of Dulce, including the families of former police chief, Raleigh Tafoya, along with the families of former Forest Ranger Dispatcher of Dulce, all of whom I got to know last year upon my second visit to Dulce.
The conference will be open to the public-at-large of Dulce, as well.
The decision to have a public announced "underground base" conference right in the town of Dulce came about because of the success of a 1991 Area 51 conference in Rachel, Nevada in which we invited the public-at-large, including anyone affiliated with the Groom Lake complex itself. That conference drew about 95 people, some of whom (anonymous, of course) could very well have been affiliated with the base. Similarly, in 1998 the first People's Rally at Area 51 was held right at the boundary line on Groom Lake road. It drew about 200 people from all over the U.S. as well as a few from Canada. It became a major news item in the Las Vegas Review Journal.
Within seven years of the Rally, the government admitted that the base exists officially and just last year, the government announced that compensation will be made to the workers who suffered from illness due to toxic chemicals.
Dulce, however, is a different story. So far, there has not been any solid, physical evidence whatsoever that there is a base near Dulce, such as deep under the Archuleta Mesa. It has all been hearsay. In fact, I would say that most of the 4000 townsfolk there do not believe that there is an underground base there. But, when it comes to UFOs, most of the population there believe in the sightings, since beginning with the mid-70's and lasting till the mid-80's, the entire town of Dulce was overwhelmed by frequent sightings of strange lights over the town. Not only that but many ranchers in the nearby communities began to report mysterious cattle mutilations during that time. Many Dulce officials attended the first Cattle Mutilations conference in Albuquerque in 1978, including then police chief, Raleigh Tafoya.
It was sometime during the mid-80s that rumors of an underground base surfaced...and still continues to this day, so much so that the entire town of Dulce has become associated with the alleged "underground base". Just do a Google search on Dulce, New Mexico and one can get untold number of items relevant to this topic.
Is the town of Dulce bothered by this unusual association with "underground base"? Probably, although the bulk of the townsfolk seem to take it all with a grain of salt. I have my own wild theory on this subject:

Upon my second visit to Dulce last year, I was quite surprised that in the gift shop at the Best Western Jicarilla Inn, there were a few T-shirts that said "Dulce, Home of the Underground Base", or something to that effect. In other words, some officials there may not mind if more people come there to spend some money, for example, at the casino there or for purchasing fishing and hunting licenses. Will it be good for a little tourism? However, will this conference put an end, once and for all, that there are no underground bases in or near Dulce? It will be fascinating.
The Inn will allow the use of the meeting room for a full day....and the entire total cost of the use of the meeting room is only 75. Therefore, the cost to the public will only be about 2 a person, if, let's say, 35 people show up. We will also invite local newspaper reporters, as well as some local TV news crew from Farmington.
